Parental Controls Not Working

ASUS Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

ASUS parental controls (AiProtection or Parental Controls tab) not blocking sites or ignoring schedules is most often caused by the feature not being enabled correctly, the device using a different DNS server that bypasses the router filter, or the child device using a VPN or mobile data instead of the home WiFi. Ensure AiProtection is active and the DNS filter is set to router-level.

Affected Models

  • ASUS RT-AX88U
  • ASUS RT-AX86U
  • ASUS RT-AX58U
  • ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8)

Common Causes

  • AiProtection is not enabled — parental controls require AiProtection to be active
  • Device is using DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) in the browser, bypassing the router DNS filter
  • Child is switching to mobile data rather than the home WiFi
  • Time scheduling conflict — device clock is in a different time zone than the router

How to Fix It

  1. Log in to the ASUS admin panel. Go to AiProtection > Parental Controls. Confirm that AiProtection is toggled ON — the parental controls tab is inactive if AiProtection is off.

  2. In the Parental Controls tab, confirm the device you want to restrict is listed and has the correct profile applied. The control only applies to the specific device MAC address you have configured.

  3. Disable DNS-over-HTTPS in the browsers on the child device. In Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Security > Use secure DNS — turn it off. Firefox has a similar setting under Network Settings.

DoH sends DNS queries directly to services like Cloudflare or Google, bypassing the router DNS filter entirely. This is the most common way ASUS parental controls are inadvertently bypassed.

  4. Check that the router time zone is set correctly under Administration > System > Time Zone. Schedules run on the router clock, so a wrong time zone causes blocks to apply at the wrong hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ASUS parental controls block apps, not just websites?

ASUS AiProtection parental controls primarily work at the DNS and URL level — they block websites by category (adult, gambling, social media, etc.) and by schedule. They cannot block specific apps directly. For app-level control, use the Screen Time features built into iOS and Android in addition to the router controls.
