Slow WiFi Speeds / Poor Performance

Eero Mesh WiFi Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Eero slow speeds are most often caused by the device connecting to a distant node instead of the nearest one, the ISP connection speed being slower than expected, or WiFi interference. Test speed directly connected to the Eero gateway via ethernet cable to determine whether the issue is the Eero itself or the ISP connection.

Affected Models

  • Eero 6
  • Eero 6+
  • Eero Pro 6
  • Eero Pro 6E
  • Eero Max 7
  • Eero (3rd gen)

Common Causes

  • Device connected to a far node instead of the nearest one — client steering not working optimally
  • ISP is delivering less speed than subscribed — Eero cannot exceed what the ISP provides
  • WiFi interference from neighboring networks reducing throughput
  • Old or slow client device with a limited WiFi adapter
  • Eero nodes too far apart — weak backhaul reduces speed delivered to end devices

How to Fix It

  1. Test speed at the Eero gateway via ethernet.

Connect a laptop or computer to the Eero gateway using an ethernet cable and run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net. This measures the raw ISP speed without WiFi as a factor. If this speed matches what your ISP plan promises, the Eero hardware is fine and the slow WiFi is due to WiFi factors or device placement.

  2. Check device placement relative to Eero nodes.

WiFi speed drops significantly with distance and walls. Open the Eero app and check the signal strength reading for your device — a device connecting at poor signal will get low speeds. Moving a satellite Eero node closer to where slow speeds occur often dramatically improves performance.

  3. Check for neighboring WiFi interference.

In areas with many WiFi networks (apartments, dense neighborhoods), congestion on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels can reduce speeds. In the Eero app, check whether band steering is enabled — this helps devices use the 5 GHz band when possible, which is faster and less congested. Eero Pro models on 6 GHz have a dedicated backhaul channel that avoids most interference.

  4. Restart all Eero devices.

Unplug all Eero nodes from power, wait 30 seconds, then plug the gateway back in first. Wait until the gateway is online (solid white LED), then plug in each satellite node one by one. A full restart clears any routing table issues or memory leaks that can develop after weeks of continuous operation.

  5. Check the Eero Plus or ISP subscription speed.

Open the Eero app → Speed Test to measure the internet speed the Eero is receiving from the ISP. If the measured speed is significantly below your subscribed plan speed, call the ISP — they may need to check your line quality or modem. Eero cannot improve the speed of the internet connection provided by the ISP.

When to Call a Professional

If speeds are consistently slow even on a device directly connected to the Eero gateway via ethernet cable, the ISP is providing less bandwidth than subscribed. Contact the ISP — the issue is not with the Eero.
