Nest WiFi Not Connecting / No Internet
Google Mesh WiFi Router
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest WiFi not connecting is most often caused by an ISP outage, the modem needing a restart, or the Nest WiFi router needing a power cycle. Restart the modem first, then the Nest WiFi router — always in that order.
Affected Models
- Google Nest WiFi Router
- Google Nest WiFi Point
- Google Nest WiFi Pro
- Google WiFi (2016)
Common Causes
- ISP outage — the Nest WiFi is fine but has no internet to distribute
- Modem lost sync and needs a restart
- Nest WiFi router needs a power cycle to re-establish the WAN connection
- Double NAT — modem in router mode conflicting with the Nest WiFi
- Google Home app or account connectivity issue
How to Fix It
-
Check the ISP and modem first.
Before troubleshooting the Nest WiFi, check whether the problem is upstream. Look at the modem's internet light — if it is off or red, the ISP connection is down. Search the ISP's name and 'outage' or check the ISP's status page — if there is a widespread outage, wait for it to be resolved.
-
Restart the modem, then the Nest WiFi.
Unplug the modem from power for 30 seconds. Wait for the modem to fully reconnect to the ISP and show a solid internet light. Then restart the Nest WiFi router by unplugging it for 10 seconds and reconnecting. Always restart the modem before the Nest WiFi — the reverse order frequently fails because the router cannot get a valid IP from a modem still initializing.
-
Check the Nest WiFi LED status.
Solid white: connected and working normally. Pulsing white: starting up or updating. Pulsing orange or yellow: no internet connection. Solid orange: software update failed or critical error. If the LED is pulsing orange after a full restart, the Nest WiFi cannot reach the internet — the issue is with the modem or ISP connection.
-
Check for double NAT issues.
If the modem is actually a modem/router combo (common with ISP-provided equipment), it may be assigning IP addresses — this conflicts with the Nest WiFi doing the same. Log into the modem/router admin interface and enable Bridge Mode or DMZ for the Nest WiFi's MAC address. This lets the Nest WiFi manage all routing and prevents the IP address conflict.
-
Factory reset the Nest WiFi router.
If the problem persists after a modem restart and the internet connection is confirmed working, factory reset the Nest WiFi router. Hold the factory reset button on the bottom of the Nest WiFi router for 10 seconds until the LED turns yellow, then release. After the reset, set up the device fresh in the Google Home app — this resolves configuration corruption.
When to Call a Professional
If the modem shows a working internet connection and the Nest WiFi router's LED is still pulsing orange after a restart and factory reset, contact Google Nest support.
