Error 001
Cox ISP
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Cox Error 001 is a general connectivity error meaning your Cox modem, gateway, or cable box cannot register with Cox's network. It appears when the device fails to complete its startup process and cannot reach Cox's headend equipment. This results in no internet, no TV, or both — depending on which device shows the error.
Affected Models
- Cox Panoramic Wifi gateway
- Cox cable modems
- Cox cable TV boxes
- Cox Contour cable box
- Approved third-party DOCSIS modems on Cox network
Common Causes
- The coax cable signal is too weak for the modem to register with Cox's CMTS
- Cox has a service outage affecting your local node or neighborhood
- The modem or cable box is not provisioned or authorized on your Cox account
- A damaged, corroded, or loose coax connector is degrading the incoming signal
- The modem is incompatible with Cox's current network requirements
How to Fix It
-
Restart your Cox modem or gateway. Unplug the power cord from the back, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow 3–5 minutes for the device to fully restart and attempt to register.
A power cycle is the fastest first step and resolves many temporary Error 001 cases.
-
Check the coax cable connected to your modem. Hand-tighten the connection at both the modem and the wall outlet.
A finger-tight coax connection is important — do not use tools, but do make sure it is not loose.
-
Remove any coax splitters between the wall outlet and your modem. Connect the modem directly to the wall.
Splitters reduce signal strength. Bypassing them gives your modem the cleanest, strongest signal.
-
Check Cox's outage map at cox.com/residential/support/outage.html or use the Cox app to look for active outages near your address.
If there is a local outage, Error 001 will clear automatically once Cox restores service.
-
Log into your Cox account at cox.com and use the My Equipment section to send a refresh signal to your modem or cable box.
A remote refresh re-provisions your device on Cox's network without needing to call.
When to Call a Professional
Cox Error 001 that persists after a reboot and cable check requires Cox support. Call Cox at 800-234-3993 and report Error 001. Ask them to check your modem's signal levels remotely and send a provisioning refresh. If signal levels are low, they will schedule a technician visit. Cox equipment faults are repaired at no charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my own modem with Cox to avoid Error 001?
Yes, but it must be on Cox's approved modem list. You can find the list at cox.com. An unapproved or uncertified modem will fail to provision and show Error 001 every time. Also, when you switch to a new modem, call Cox to have it provisioned on your account before use.
Cox Error 001 appeared after a power outage. Is that normal?
Yes, this can happen. When power is restored, the modem restarts and must re-register with Cox's network. If the network is congested from many modems restarting at once (common after a widespread power outage), some registrations fail and show Error 001. Wait 10–15 minutes and restart the modem again once power has been restored fully in your area.
My Cox Panoramic gateway shows Error 001 and the app says everything is fine. Who is right?
The physical device is more reliable in this case. The app status may be cached or delayed. If your gateway shows Error 001 and you have no internet, there is a real problem. Call Cox and ask them to run a live signal check — that will give the accurate current status of your connection.
