No Internet Access

Linksys Wi-Fi Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Linksys router with no internet means the router is powered and running but cannot reach the internet through the modem. Restarting the modem first (wait 90 seconds) then the router resolves the majority of Linksys no-internet situations.

Affected Models

  • Linksys Velop mesh
  • Linksys MR series
  • Linksys EA series
  • Linksys WRT series
  • Linksys Hydra Pro

Common Causes

  • Modem lost sync with ISP — needs restart
  • WAN cable in wrong port or loose
  • ISP outage
  • PPPoE credentials incorrect on DSL connections
  • WAN IP not obtained from modem — DHCP conflict
  • Router firmware crash

How to Fix It

  1. Restart in the correct sequence.

Power off the Linksys router. Unplug the modem and wait 60 seconds. Plug the modem back in and wait 90 seconds for full ISP sync. Then power on the Linksys router. This sequence is important — the modem must be fully ready before the router tries to obtain an IP address from it.

  2. Check the WAN port cable.

The WAN/Internet port on Linksys routers is typically yellow and labelled Internet. Ensure the Ethernet cable from the modem is in the WAN port — not one of the four LAN ports. Try replacing the cable between modem and router.

  3. Log into the router and verify WAN settings.

Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1 or linksyssmartwifi.com. Login (default admin / no password, or check the label). Go to Connectivity → Internet Settings. For cable connections, set Connection Type to Automatic Configuration (DHCP). For DSL, set PPPoE and enter your ISP username and password.

  4. Test by bypassing the router.

Connect a laptop directly to the modem via Ethernet. If internet works, the problem is in the Linksys router settings or hardware. If no internet directly on the modem either, the fault is with the ISP — call them.

  5. Factory reset the router.

If settings look correct but internet still fails, the router firmware may be corrupted. Hold the reset button on the back of the Linksys router for 10 seconds until the LED flashes. This restores factory defaults — you will need to reconfigure Wi-Fi name, password, and WAN settings from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Linksys router have no internet after a power outage?

Power outages commonly cause modems to lose their sync with the ISP — the modem reboots but the ISP's DSLAM or cable head-end takes longer to register the reconnection. Wait 5 minutes after power is restored before expecting internet. If still no connection after 5 minutes, unplug the modem for 60 seconds and restart it — this forces a fresh ISP registration.
