No Internet Access
Netgear Wi-Fi Router
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Netgear router with no internet (amber internet LED) means the router is powered and connected to the modem, but cannot reach the internet. The most common fix is restarting the modem and router in the correct order.
Affected Models
- Netgear Nighthawk AX series
- Netgear Nighthawk AC series
- Netgear Orbi mesh
- Netgear RAX series
- Netgear R7000
- Netgear R6400
Common Causes
- Modem lost sync with ISP — needs restart
- WAN cable loose or in wrong port
- ISP outage in your area
- WAN connection type set incorrectly (PPPoE vs Dynamic IP)
- MAC address binding — ISP recognises old router only
- Router firmware crash
How to Fix It
-
Restart modem and router in sequence.
Power off the Netgear router. Unplug the modem and wait 60 seconds — this forces the modem to drop its connection and re-sync with the ISP. Plug the modem back in and wait 90 seconds for all its lights to stabilise. Then power the Netgear router back on. Do not skip the wait time — the modem needs to fully re-establish before the router requests an IP.
-
Check the WAN (internet) port.
The WAN/Internet port on a Netgear router is usually yellow and labelled 'Internet'. Make sure the Ethernet cable from the modem is plugged into this port — not one of the four LAN ports. Try replacing the Ethernet cable between the modem and router, as cable failure is a common but overlooked cause.
-
Log into the router and check the internet settings.
Open a browser and go to routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1. Login with admin and your password (default is on the label on the bottom of the router). Go to Basic → Internet. Verify the connection type: most cable connections use 'Dynamic IP', most DSL connections use 'PPPoE' with your ISP username and password. Correct any mismatched settings and click Apply.
-
Clone the MAC address.
Some ISPs register the MAC address of the first device connected to the modem. If you replaced a router, the ISP may refuse to issue an IP to the new router's MAC address. In the Netgear admin panel, go to Advanced → Setup → Internet Setup and use the MAC Address Clone feature to copy your computer's MAC address to the router.
-
Test by connecting directly to the modem.
Plug a laptop directly into the modem with an Ethernet cable, bypassing the router entirely. If you get internet directly, the router settings or hardware is the problem. If you still have no internet directly on the modem, the issue is with your ISP — call them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Netgear router have an amber internet light?
An amber internet light on a Netgear router means the router has a physical connection to the modem but cannot obtain an internet connection from the ISP. This is most often resolved by restarting the modem first (wait 90 seconds), then restarting the router. If the amber light persists after the restart sequence, log into routerlogin.net and verify the WAN connection type matches your ISP's requirements.
