Wi-Fi Dropping / Disconnecting

Netgear Wi-Fi Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Netgear Wi-Fi drops are most often caused by channel congestion from nearby networks, the router overheating, or outdated firmware. Updating the firmware and changing the Wi-Fi channel resolves most drop issues.

Affected Models

  • Netgear Nighthawk AX series
  • Netgear Nighthawk AC series
  • Netgear Orbi mesh
  • Netgear R7000
  • Netgear R6400

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi channel congested by neighbouring networks
  • Router overheating in an enclosed space
  • Outdated firmware with Wi-Fi stability bugs
  • Beamforming or MU-MIMO causing compatibility issues with certain devices
  • 2.4 GHz interference from microwaves and cordless phones
  • DHCP lease timeout causing devices to lose their IP address

How to Fix It

  1. Update the firmware.

Log into routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1. Go to Advanced → Administration → Firmware Update → Check. Install any available updates. Netgear releases firmware regularly to fix Wi-Fi stability and security issues. Always run the latest firmware for best performance.

  2. Change the Wi-Fi channel.

Log into the router admin page. Go to Basic → Wireless → Advanced. Change the channel from Auto to a fixed channel. For 2.4 GHz use channel 1, 6, or 11 (non-overlapping channels). For 5 GHz choose any channel not heavily used by nearby routers. Use a free Wi-Fi analyser app to see which channels are least congested near you.

  3. Give the router better ventilation.

Netgear Nighthawk routers run warm. Place the router on a hard open surface — not inside a cabinet, drawer, or tucked behind equipment. If the router is hot to the touch, thermal throttling or thermal shutdown is causing the drops. Antenna-equipped models benefit from having antennas positioned vertically.

  4. Extend the DHCP lease time.

Log into the router admin panel. Go to Advanced → Setup → LAN Setup. Increase the Address Reservation time or DHCP Lease Time to 1440 minutes (24 hours). Short lease times cause devices to briefly disconnect while renewing their IP address.

  5. Try disabling Smart Connect (band steering).

Netgear's Smart Connect feature combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one SSID and automatically moves devices between bands. This occasionally causes drops when devices switch bands unexpectedly. Go to Wireless Settings and disable Smart Connect to give 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separate names, then manually assign devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Netgear Nighthawk keep dropping Wi-Fi?

Nighthawk routers are powerful but run hot — overheating is a very common cause of drops and reboots. Ensure the router is in an open, ventilated location. Also check for firmware updates, as Netgear releases patches specifically for Wi-Fi stability. If the drops happen at the same time each day, check whether a scheduled Smart Network Update or firmware download is triggering a momentary restart.
