Firmware Update Failed

ASUS Router

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

If your ASUS router firmware update failed, the router may reboot and show an error or get stuck with blinking LEDs. Firmware update failures are usually caused by a bad internet connection during the download, uploading the wrong firmware file, or an unstable power supply. In most cases, the router can be recovered without a factory reset.

Affected Models

  • ASUS RT-AX88U
  • ASUS RT-AX86U
  • ASUS RT-AX58U
  • ASUS RT-AC68U
  • ASUS ZenWiFi and most ASUS router models

Common Causes

  • The internet connection dropped during the firmware download, resulting in a corrupted file
  • The wrong firmware file was uploaded (wrong model number or wrong region)
  • Power was interrupted during the firmware flashing process
  • The firmware file was not fully downloaded before the update started
  • A browser issue caused the upload to fail midway through

How to Fix It

  1. Wait and observe. After a failed update, some ASUS routers automatically revert to the previous firmware and reboot. Give the router 5 minutes after the failure before doing anything.

All-LED blinking during this time is normal. Do not unplug the router while it is trying to recover on its own.

  2. If the router reboots and works normally, the automatic rollback succeeded. Log into the admin panel and verify which firmware version is running under Administration > Firmware Version.

If the router works, you can try the firmware update again — this time using a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.

  3. If the router is stuck with blinking LEDs and does not recover, use ASUS Recovery Mode. Download the correct firmware for your exact router model from the ASUS support website on another device.

Make sure the firmware file is for your exact model number — not a similar model. A wrong firmware file can brick the router.

  4. To enter ASUS Recovery Mode: Turn off the router. Hold the reset button while turning it back on. Release after the power LED blinks slowly. Connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cable.

In recovery mode, the router's Wi-Fi is off. You must use a wired connection.

  5. Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1. You will see the ASUS Firmware Restoration page. Upload the firmware file you downloaded. The router will flash the new firmware and reboot.

Do not interrupt the restoration process. Keep the ethernet cable connected and do not close the browser.

When to Call a Professional

A failed ASUS firmware update is almost always recoverable at home. ASUS routers have a built-in recovery mode for exactly this situation. You do not need a technician. If recovery mode fails, contact ASUS support — they may offer a replacement under warranty if the router is bricked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to update my router firmware?

Yes, and it is highly recommended. Firmware updates fix security vulnerabilities, bugs, and improve performance. Always use a wired ethernet connection when updating firmware — never rely on Wi-Fi. Make sure to download the firmware from the official ASUS support site, not third-party sources.

My ASUS router has all its LEDs blinking after a failed update. Is it bricked?

Not necessarily. Uniform blinking on all LEDs is often the router trying to recover. Wait 5 to 10 minutes before concluding it is stuck. If it does not recover on its own, use ASUS Recovery Mode (detailed in the fix steps above) to restore it. Most ASUS routers can be fully recovered from a failed update.

Where can I download official ASUS firmware?

Go to the ASUS support website and search for your exact router model number. The model number is printed on the label on the bottom of the router. Download from the official ASUS site only. Third-party firmware files are not verified and can cause permanent damage.
