Wi-Fi Not Broadcasting
ASUS Router
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your ASUS router is not broadcasting its Wi-Fi network, devices cannot see it at all in the Wi-Fi list. This is different from being connected but having no internet. The most common causes are a disabled radio band, a hidden SSID setting, or a router that needs a firmware update or restart.
Affected Models
- ASUS RT-AX88U
- ASUS RT-AX86U
- ASUS RT-AX58U
- ASUS RT-AC68U
- ASUS ZenWiFi and most ASUS router models
Common Causes
- The wireless radio (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band) has been accidentally disabled in the settings
- The 'Hide SSID' option was turned on, making the network invisible to device Wi-Fi scans
- The router has a temporary firmware glitch that stopped the wireless radio from broadcasting
- The Wi-Fi schedule feature has turned off Wi-Fi during programmed off-hours
- The router has overheated and disabled the wireless radio as a protective measure
How to Fix It
-
Restart the router. Unplug it from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully boot. Check if your Wi-Fi network reappears.
A reboot clears most temporary Wi-Fi radio glitches. It is always the best first step.
-
Log into the admin panel at 192.168.1.1 using a wired ethernet connection. Go to Wireless > General. Check that 'Enable Radio' is set to Yes for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
The Enable Radio setting can be accidentally turned off. Check both frequency bands — one may be enabled and the other not.
-
Check if 'Hide SSID' is enabled. On the same Wireless > General page, look for 'Hide SSID'. If it is set to Yes, your network is broadcasting but invisible. Set it to No.
A hidden SSID means devices can't see your network in their Wi-Fi scan list. You can still connect manually by typing the network name, but most people find this confusing.
-
Check the Wi-Fi schedule. Go to Wireless > Professional and look for Wireless Schedule. If a schedule is enabled, Wi-Fi may be turned off during certain hours.
Many parents set Wi-Fi schedules but forget about them. Check this setting if Wi-Fi disappears at the same time each day.
-
Update the router firmware. Outdated firmware can cause the wireless radio to stop broadcasting. Go to Administration > Firmware Upgrade to check for and install updates.
If a firmware update is available, install it. If Wi-Fi still does not broadcast after the update, perform a factory reset.
When to Call a Professional
Wi-Fi not broadcasting is almost always a configuration or firmware issue. You do not need a technician. A factory reset is a reliable last resort if all other steps fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
My ASUS router's Wi-Fi LED is off. What does that mean?
The Wi-Fi LED off usually means the wireless radio is disabled. Check the admin panel under Wireless > General and verify Enable Radio is set to Yes. Some ASUS routers have a physical Wi-Fi on/off button on the side or back of the unit. Make sure it was not accidentally pressed.
My ASUS router shows 5 GHz Wi-Fi but not 2.4 GHz. Why?
The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios are controlled independently. The 2.4 GHz radio may have been disabled separately. Log into the admin panel and check both wireless bands under Wireless > General. Enable the 2.4 GHz radio if it is off.
I can see my ASUS Wi-Fi on some devices but not others. What's going on?
Some older devices only support 2.4 GHz and cannot see 5 GHz networks. If your ASUS router's 2.4 GHz network is disabled, these older devices will show no Wi-Fi. Check that both frequency bands are enabled. For best compatibility, give both bands separate names so you can easily tell which is which.
