WiFi Not Broadcasting
D-Link Router
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your D-Link router is not showing its Wi-Fi network name in the list. This is called the SSID, and it can be hidden accidentally or turned off. The fix is usually quick and done through the admin panel.
Affected Models
- D-Link DIR-615
- D-Link DIR-825
- D-Link DIR-882
- D-Link DIR-2660
- D-Link AX1800
Common Causes
- SSID broadcast has been turned off in the router settings
- The wireless radio has been disabled accidentally
- A firmware glitch has caused Wi-Fi to stop broadcasting
- The router is on a Wi-Fi channel blocked in your country or region
- The router needs a reboot after a power surge or outage
How to Fix It
-
Check that the Wi-Fi light on the router is on. If it is off or blinking red, the radio is disabled.
Some D-Link routers have a physical Wi-Fi on/off button on the back or side.
-
Reboot the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
A glitch after a power outage often causes Wi-Fi to stop broadcasting. A reboot usually fixes it.
-
Log in to the admin panel at 192.168.0.1 using a wired ethernet connection.
You need a cable connection because Wi-Fi is not working.
-
Go to Setup, then Wireless Settings. Make sure Enable Wireless is checked and SSID Broadcast is set to Enabled.
If SSID Broadcast is set to Disabled, your network is hidden but still exists.
-
Save the settings and wait 30 seconds, then scan for Wi-Fi networks on your phone or laptop.
If the network still does not appear, try changing the Wi-Fi channel to 1, 6, or 11.
When to Call a Professional
If the wireless radio cannot be turned on from the admin panel, the Wi-Fi hardware inside the router may have failed. Contact D-Link support to check whether your model qualifies for a warranty replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
My neighbor can see their Wi-Fi but I can't see mine. What is wrong?
Your router's SSID broadcast is most likely turned off. Log in to the admin panel with a cable and re-enable it. You can also connect to a hidden network by typing the name manually on your device.
Can my router broadcast Wi-Fi but still have no internet?
Yes, those are two separate things. The router can broadcast a Wi-Fi signal even if the internet is down. If the network shows up but you have no internet, the problem is with your ISP connection.
Why is only the 5GHz band missing but 2.4GHz is visible?
The 5GHz radio may have been turned off separately in the admin panel. Go to Wireless Settings and check that both bands are enabled. Older devices only support 2.4GHz, so they would not show 5GHz anyway.
