DHCP Error
Linksys Router
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
DHCP is the system your Linksys router uses to automatically give each device a unique address on your network. Without a DHCP address, a device cannot communicate on the network or reach the internet. This shows up as 'No Internet Access', 'Limited Connectivity', or a yellow triangle on your Wi-Fi icon. A restart almost always fixes it immediately.
Affected Models
- Linksys Velop Series
- Linksys EA Series
- Linksys EA7500
- Linksys WRT3200ACM
- Most Linksys home routers
Common Causes
- The router's DHCP service has crashed or frozen from long uptime
- Two devices on the network have been assigned the same address
- The router has run out of available addresses in the DHCP pool
- Another device (such as a second router) is also running a DHCP service
- DHCP was accidentally turned off in the Linksys settings
How to Fix It
-
Restart the Linksys router. Unplug the power adapter, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait two minutes.
This resets the DHCP service and clears the address table. It fixes the majority of DHCP errors.
-
On the device that will not connect, forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect. This forces it to request a fresh address.
On iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the 'i' next to the network > Forget This Network. On Android: hold the network name > Forget.
-
Log into your Linksys router at 192.168.1.1. Go to Connectivity > Local Network and confirm DHCP is set to Enabled.
If it is disabled, turn it back on and save. Linksys uses the term 'DHCP Server' in the settings.
-
In the same DHCP settings, check the maximum number of users (devices). If you have many smart home devices, increase this number.
Each Wi-Fi device, smart speaker, smart bulb, and camera counts toward the total. Homes with many smart devices can exceed default limits.
-
If all else fails, press and hold the Router Reset button (a small pinhole on the back) for 10 seconds to factory reset.
This erases all settings. You will need to set up the Wi-Fi name and password again. The default login is printed on the router's label.
When to Call a Professional
DHCP errors almost never require professional help. If the problem continues after all steps including a factory reset, contact Linksys support at linksys.com/support. In rare cases, the router hardware may have failed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does DHCP cause problems after the router has been running for weeks?
As the router runs continuously, its memory gradually fills with connection records and temporary data. Over time this can overwhelm the DHCP service. A restart clears all that accumulated memory and gives DHCP a fresh start. Setting a weekly automatic restart schedule prevents this from becoming a recurring problem.
One of my devices can connect to Wi-Fi but shows no internet, while others work fine. Is that DHCP?
It could be an IP address conflict. If two devices accidentally end up with the same address, one of them will have no internet. Restart the router to clear the address table. Also make sure the problem device has not been set to use a manual (static) IP address.
Does the Linksys Velop app help with DHCP issues?
The Linksys app can show you connected devices and basic network status. For DHCP settings, you need to access the full admin interface at 192.168.1.1 in a browser. The app is convenient for monitoring but does not expose all the technical settings you need for DHCP troubleshooting.
