Overheating
Linksys Router
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Linksys routers run warm by design, but there is a difference between warm and dangerously hot. When a router overheats, it automatically slows down or drops connections to protect itself. Left unchecked, overheating shortens the router's lifespan significantly. In most cases, the fix is as simple as moving the router to a better location.
Affected Models
- Linksys Velop Series
- Linksys EA Series
- Linksys WRT Series
- Linksys MX Series
- All Linksys home routers
Common Causes
- The router is placed inside an enclosed TV cabinet or bookshelf with no airflow
- Objects placed on top of or against the router are blocking ventilation slots
- Dust has accumulated inside the router vents over months or years
- The router is in a very warm room or near a heat source such as a radiator
- The router has been running continuously for a long time without a restart
How to Fix It
-
Relocate the router to an open, uncovered location. A shelf in the open with nothing around it is ideal. Ensure at least six inches of clearance on all sides.
Enclosed spaces — TV cabinets, drawers, or closets — trap heat and are the leading cause of router overheating.
-
Remove any objects placed on top of or around the router. Books, remotes, phone chargers, and decorative items all reduce airflow.
Even a single book resting against the side of the router can raise the operating temperature noticeably.
-
Use compressed air to blow dust out of the router's vents. Do this outside or near a window. Hold the can upright and use short bursts.
Dust acts as insulation and prevents heat from escaping. A yearly cleaning maintains efficient airflow.
-
Unplug the router, let it cool completely for five minutes, then plug it back in.
Allowing a full cool-down before restarting protects the components during the boot process.
-
If the area is naturally warm, position a small fan nearby to improve air circulation around the router.
A basic desk fan pointed toward the router from the side is very effective and inexpensive.
When to Call a Professional
If the router is regularly very hot after improving its location and cleaning, the internal components may be failing. A router that is too hot to hold briefly should be replaced. Check your warranty at linksys.com/support — Linksys Velop models have a limited hardware warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How hot is too hot for a Linksys router?
A router that feels warm or slightly hot when you briefly rest your hand on it is operating normally. If holding your hand on it is uncomfortable after two or three seconds, it is too hot. A burning smell is a serious warning — unplug the router immediately and do not use it until you have improved its ventilation.
Can I put my Linksys router on its side to save space?
Most Linksys routers are designed to stand upright or lie flat. Check your router's manual for the intended orientation. Avoiding enclosed spaces is more important than the exact orientation. If saving space is a concern, mounting the router on a wall bracket is a great option — it keeps it in the open with good airflow.
Does my Linksys Velop node overheat more than a traditional router?
Velop nodes can run slightly warmer than traditional routers because they pack a lot of wireless hardware into a compact design. A Velop node that is warm to the touch is normal. Make sure Velop nodes are not placed inside cabinets, in direct sunlight, or near heat sources. Good placement is the most important factor for keeping any mesh node at a safe temperature.
