Unable to Connect to Internet
Linksys Router
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When your Linksys router is powered on but cannot reach the internet, the problem is usually between the router and your modem — or between your modem and your internet provider. Your devices can see the router and connect to its network, but no data can flow to the outside world. Restarting the modem and router in the correct order fixes this most of the time.
Affected Models
- Linksys Velop Series
- Linksys EA Series
- Linksys WRT Series
- Linksys MX Series
- Most Linksys home routers
Common Causes
- The modem lost its connection to the internet provider
- The cable between the modem and router's WAN port has come loose
- Your internet provider is experiencing an outage in your area
- The router's internet connection type setting does not match what your provider requires
- The router's memory is full and needs a restart to clear it
How to Fix It
-
Unplug your modem's power cable from the wall. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait a full two minutes for it to reconnect to your provider.
The modem is the device your internet cable plugs into — it is separate from the Linksys router and is usually provided by your ISP.
-
After the modem is back online, unplug your Linksys router's power adapter. Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
Always restart the modem before the router. The modem must be fully connected before the router tries to get an IP address.
-
Check the cable going from the modem to the yellow WAN/Internet port on the Linksys router. Unplug both ends and push them back in firmly until they click.
A partially seated cable is a surprisingly common cause of no-internet errors.
-
Log into your Linksys router. Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1. Sign in and check the Status page to see what the router reports about the internet connection.
The default admin username is blank (leave it empty) and the default password is admin. Change this after logging in if you have not already.
-
Use your phone's mobile data to check your internet provider's website or social media for outage reports in your area.
Searching your provider's name and the word 'outage' on social media often shows real-time reports from affected users.
When to Call a Professional
If the internet does not return after restarting both devices and checking all cables, call your internet provider. They can verify whether there is an outage and whether your account is active. If the modem is more than five years old, it may be due for replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Linksys app says 'Internet Down' but the router lights look normal. Why?
The router's lights show local activity and power — not necessarily a live internet connection. The app is more accurate because it actually tests the connection to the internet. When the app says 'Internet Down', the router is working as a local network but cannot reach the outside world. Restarting the modem is the first step.
What is the difference between the modem and the Linksys router?
The modem is the device your internet provider gives you — it connects to the cable, phone line, or fibre coming into your home. The Linksys router connects to the modem and shares that internet connection wirelessly to all your devices. If your ISP gave you a single box that does both, it is called a modem-router combo or gateway.
After restarting, how long before the internet comes back?
The modem typically takes one to three minutes to reconnect to your provider. The Linksys router then takes about one more minute to get its own connection. In total, expect to wait three to five minutes before testing the internet again.
