Wi-Fi Not Broadcasting

Linksys Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Linksys router's Wi-Fi network has completely disappeared from the list of available networks on your phone or computer, the router has stopped broadcasting its wireless signal. This is different from having no internet — the router may be working but just not transmitting Wi-Fi. A restart or a quick settings check almost always brings it back.

Affected Models

  • Linksys Velop Series
  • Linksys EA Series
  • Linksys WRT Series
  • Linksys EA7500
  • Most Linksys home routers

Common Causes

  • The wireless radio was disabled in the router settings
  • The network name (SSID) was set to hidden
  • A power flicker reset a setting or caused a temporary wireless glitch
  • A firmware update disrupted the wireless configuration
  • The router has been running for an extended period and needs a restart

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the Linksys router's power adapter, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait two full minutes for it to restart.

This is the first and most effective step. Most wireless broadcasting issues resolve with a simple restart.

  2. Connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cable. Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1.

You need a wired connection because the Wi-Fi is not available. Use the ethernet cable that came with the router.

  3. Log into the Linksys admin page. Go to Wireless > Basic Wireless Settings and confirm Wireless Network Mode is not set to 'Disabled'.

If it shows Disabled, change it to Mixed or your preferred setting, click Save, and restart the router.

  4. In Wireless settings, check that SSID Broadcast is set to Enabled. If it shows Disabled, your network exists but is invisible.

Enabling SSID broadcast makes the network name appear in the list of available Wi-Fi networks on nearby devices.

  5. Check both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio settings separately. Both need to be enabled for the full range of devices to find the network.

On the Linksys admin page, look for tabs or separate sections for each band.

When to Call a Professional

If the Wi-Fi still does not broadcast after all steps including a factory reset, the wireless antenna or radio chip in the router may have failed. Check your warranty at linksys.com/support. Linksys Velop nodes with a failed wireless radio need to be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Linksys Velop node is online in the app but the Wi-Fi is gone. What does that mean?

The Velop node is connected to the mesh network via a wired or wireless backhaul — that is what the app sees. However, the node broadcasting Wi-Fi to your devices is a separate function. If the node is online in the app but not broadcasting, the wireless radio on that specific node may need a restart or factory reset.

Does hiding the Wi-Fi network name improve security?

Hiding your network name gives a false sense of security. Any basic network scanning tool can detect hidden networks. A strong, unique Wi-Fi password is a far more effective security measure. Hiding the SSID just makes it inconvenient to connect new devices without improving actual security.

After a factory reset, what is the default Wi-Fi network name and password?

After a factory reset, the default network name and password are printed on the label on the bottom of your Linksys router. They typically look like 'LinksysXXXXX' for the network name. Connect using those credentials, then change them to something personal in the settings.
