Cannot Access Admin Page
Netgear Router
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Netgear admin page at routerlogin.net is where you control all your router settings. When it does not load, you are locked out of your router's controls — but your internet may still be working fine. This is usually caused by a browser issue, a wrong address, or your computer not being properly connected to the router.
Affected Models
- Netgear Nighthawk Series
- Netgear Orbi
- Netgear R6700
- Netgear R7000
- All Netgear home routers
Common Causes
- Your computer is not connected to the Netgear router's network
- The browser is loading a cached or outdated version of the page
- Someone changed the router's admin login address from the default
- A browser extension or security software is blocking access to the admin page
- The router needs a restart to respond to admin page requests
How to Fix It
-
Make sure your computer is connected to your Netgear router's Wi-Fi — or better yet, plug in an ethernet cable directly from the computer to the router.
You cannot access the admin page from another network. You must be connected directly to your Netgear router.
-
Open a browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press Enter. This is the router's direct IP address and often works when routerlogin.net does not.
Make sure you are typing in the address bar at the top of the browser, not the search box. Some Netgear routers use 192.168.0.1 instead.
-
Try a different web browser. If you use Chrome, try Firefox or Edge instead. Browser extensions can sometimes block admin pages.
You can also try opening an 'incognito' or 'private' window in your current browser, which disables most extensions.
-
Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try again. Old cached data can prevent the admin page from loading.
In Chrome: press Ctrl+Shift+Delete > select All Time > check Cookies and Cached Images > click Clear Data.
-
Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. After it fully reboots (about two minutes), try accessing routerlogin.net again.
A fresh restart often restores the admin page response.
When to Call a Professional
If you cannot access the admin page and have tried all steps, a factory reset will restore access. Press and hold the Reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds. Note that this will erase all your settings. If you need help re-setting up after a reset, contact Netgear support at netgear.com/support.
Frequently Asked Questions
I forgot my router admin password. How do I get back in?
The default username is admin and the default password is password for most Netgear routers. If that does not work, someone has changed the password. You will need to factory reset the router by holding the Reset button for 10 seconds. After the reset, use the default credentials.
Can I access the admin page from my phone?
Yes. Make sure your phone is connected to the Netgear router's Wi-Fi. Open a browser on your phone and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. You can also download the Netgear Nighthawk app to manage your router from your phone.
Why does routerlogin.net redirect to a Google search instead of my router?
This means your browser is treating routerlogin.net as a search query rather than a web address. Make sure you are typing in the address bar (the bar at the very top of the browser), not a search box. Alternatively, type the IP address 192.168.1.1 directly — that always works.
