Firmware Update Failed

Netgear Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Firmware is the built-in software that runs your router. When an update fails, the router could not download or install the new software correctly. This usually happens due to an internet interruption during the update. In most cases your router will still work fine — it just stays on the older firmware version.

Affected Models

  • Netgear Nighthawk RAX Series
  • Netgear Orbi RBK Series
  • Netgear R7000
  • Netgear R8000
  • Most Netgear home routers

Common Causes

  • The internet connection dropped in the middle of the download
  • The firmware file was downloaded incorrectly or was corrupted
  • A power cut or power fluctuation interrupted the update process
  • The router does not have enough free memory to install the update
  • The update server was temporarily unavailable when the router tried to connect

How to Fix It

  1. Do not panic — most failed firmware updates leave the router working on its previous version. Check if your internet still works.

If the internet is working normally, there is no urgent need to update immediately.

  2. Restart the router by unplugging the power for 30 seconds. When it comes back on, log into routerlogin.net and check if the update is available again.

Sometimes a restart clears the error and the update can be retried successfully.

  3. If the automatic update keeps failing, download the firmware file manually. Go to netgear.com/support, search your router model, and download the latest firmware file.

Your exact model number is on the sticker on the bottom of your router.

  4. To install manually, log into routerlogin.net. Go to Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update. Choose the file you downloaded and click Upload.

Do not unplug or touch the router during the update. It typically takes two to five minutes.

  5. During the update, connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi. This prevents a Wi-Fi drop from interrupting the process.

Ethernet is a physical cable. Using it makes the update far more reliable than updating over Wi-Fi.

When to Call a Professional

If your router will not boot at all after a failed update, it may be in a 'bricked' state. Do not attempt advanced recovery steps unless you are comfortable with technology. Contact Netgear support at netgear.com/support for guided recovery. They can walk you through a tftp recovery process by phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a failed firmware update break my router permanently?

Not usually. Most Netgear routers have a safety system that keeps the old firmware intact if an update fails. The router simply stays on the previous version. Only in very rare cases — usually involving a power cut mid-update — does a router become fully unresponsive.

Do I actually need to update my router's firmware?

Yes, and it is important to stay reasonably up to date. Firmware updates fix security vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit to access your home network. They also fix bugs that cause connection drops, slow speeds, and other problems.

How long should a firmware update take?

A Netgear firmware update typically takes two to five minutes to download and install. The router will restart automatically at the end. Your internet will be offline during this time. If it has been more than 15 minutes with no progress, the update may have frozen.
