VPN Passthrough Error

Netgear Router

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

VPN passthrough allows your devices to connect to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) through your router. When it fails, your router is blocking or interfering with the VPN connection. This is common when working from home and connecting to your company's network remotely.

Affected Models

  • Netgear Nighthawk Series
  • Netgear R7000
  • Netgear R6400
  • Netgear Orbi
  • Most Netgear home routers

Common Causes

  • VPN passthrough is disabled in the router's firewall settings
  • The router's SPI firewall is blocking VPN protocol packets
  • The VPN type used by your company (IPSec, PPTP, or L2TP) is not enabled in the router
  • Another firewall or security tool on your computer is blocking the VPN traffic
  • The router firmware has a known bug affecting VPN connections

How to Fix It

  1. Log into routerlogin.net. Go to Advanced > Advanced Setup > WAN Setup. Look for 'Disable SPI Firewall' and try enabling this option temporarily to test.

SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall can sometimes block VPN connections. Only disable it temporarily for testing.

  2. In the router settings, find the VPN Passthrough section. Make sure IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP passthrough are all turned on.

The location varies by model. Try Advanced > Advanced Setup > WAN Setup or check under Firewall settings.

  3. Update your router's firmware to the latest version. Go to Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update.

Firmware updates often include fixes for VPN compatibility issues.

  4. Temporarily disable Windows Firewall or your security software, then test the VPN again. If it works, add the VPN app as an exception in your firewall.

This helps isolate whether the block is coming from the router or from your computer.

  5. If your VPN app allows it, try changing the VPN protocol. Switching from IPSec to OpenVPN or IKEv2 often resolves router compatibility issues.

Your VPN app's settings usually have an option to choose the connection protocol. OpenVPN over TCP (port 443) is hardest for routers to accidentally block.

When to Call a Professional

If you are connecting to a work VPN and cannot resolve the issue yourself, contact your company's IT support team. They can confirm the VPN type being used and advise on the correct router settings. For personal VPN services, contact the VPN provider's customer support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VPN passthrough and having a VPN built into the router?

VPN passthrough means the router allows your computer or phone to connect to a VPN server elsewhere — like your work office. A built-in router VPN means the router itself encrypts all traffic before it leaves your home. Most home users need passthrough for work VPNs. Built-in router VPN is a more advanced setup for privacy-conscious users.

My work VPN worked at the office but not at home. Is the router the problem?

Possibly. Work VPNs are usually set up to work on office networks and may have strict requirements. Your home router's firewall or NAT (network address translation) settings may conflict with the VPN. Contact your company's IT support — they have likely helped other remote workers with this exact issue.

Does using a VPN slow down my internet on a Netgear router?

VPN passthrough itself does not slow down your connection significantly. However, the VPN encryption process on your device does add some overhead. If your internet feels slow while connected to a VPN, that is normal and is a feature of the VPN — not a router fault.
