WPS Failed

Netgear Router

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

WPS is the button on your router that lets you connect devices without typing a password — you just press the button and the device connects automatically. When WPS fails, the two devices could not complete the handshake in the two-minute window. This is a minor issue — you can always connect the normal way by entering your Wi-Fi password instead.

Affected Models

  • Netgear Nighthawk Series
  • Netgear R6700
  • Netgear R7000
  • Netgear Orbi
  • Most Netgear routers with WPS button

Common Causes

  • The WPS button on the router was not held long enough or was not pressed at the right time
  • The two-minute pairing window expired before the device was ready
  • WPS is disabled in the router's settings
  • The device you are trying to connect does not support WPS
  • The router and device are too far apart for a reliable WPS pairing signal

How to Fix It

  1. Press the WPS button on the back of your Netgear router firmly for two seconds until the WPS light starts flashing.

The WPS button is usually on the back of the router. On some models it is the same as the reset button — check your manual.

  2. Within two minutes of pressing the router's WPS button, activate WPS on the device you want to connect. On most Android phones this is in Wi-Fi settings.

You must act quickly — the pairing window is only two minutes. Have the device ready before pressing the router button.

  3. Move the device closer to the router and try again. Distance and walls can prevent a successful WPS handshake.

Try to be within the same room as the router for the initial pairing.

  4. If WPS keeps failing, log into routerlogin.net and go to Advanced > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings. Check that WPS is enabled.

WPS can be turned off in settings. Turning it back on and saving the change may resolve the issue.

  5. Skip WPS entirely and connect manually. Go to Wi-Fi settings on your device, select your network name, and type your Wi-Fi password.

Manual connection is just as secure as WPS and always works reliably.

When to Call a Professional

WPS failure never requires professional help. If WPS consistently fails, simply use the standard method of connecting by entering your Wi-Fi password. If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password, log into routerlogin.net to view or change it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WPS safe to use?

WPS has a known security weakness called the WPS PIN vulnerability. For this reason, many security experts recommend disabling WPS and connecting devices manually with a password. If you only use the push-button method (not the PIN method), the risk is lower, but disabling WPS altogether is the safest choice.

Why does WPS work on some of my devices but not others?

Not all devices support WPS. Newer iPhones and iPads do not support WPS at all — Apple removed it. Most Android phones and laptops do support it, but it varies by model. If your device does not support WPS, simply connect the normal way with a password.

Can I connect a printer using WPS?

Yes — many printers support WPS. Press the WPS button on your router, then within two minutes activate WPS on the printer. Check your printer's manual for the exact steps, as the process varies by brand and model.
