Network Keeps Disconnecting / Repeated Drops

TP-Link Mesh WiFi Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

TP-Link Deco repeatedly disconnecting is most often caused by an unstable ISP connection, a modem dropping sync periodically, or a satellite node losing its backhaul connection. Check the modem's connection stability and restart the modem and all Deco devices.

Affected Models

  • TP-Link Deco XE75
  • TP-Link Deco X90
  • TP-Link Deco X68
  • TP-Link Deco X55
  • TP-Link Deco M5
  • TP-Link Deco E4

Common Causes

  • ISP line dropping sync intermittently — causes the whole network to drop briefly
  • Modem losing sync periodically — common in cable modems over 4 years old
  • Deco satellite node losing mesh backhaul at the edge of range
  • IP address lease renewal causing a brief interruption
  • Overheating Deco unit reducing performance and causing instability

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether the whole network drops or just specific devices.

If all devices lose internet at the same time, the ISP or modem is the cause. If only devices on one Deco satellite node disconnect, that node is losing its backhaul connection. Open the Deco app and check the activity log — it shows when 'Internet offline' events occurred.

  2. Restart the modem and all Deco units.

Unplug the modem for 30 seconds. Unplug all Deco units. Plug the modem back in and wait for a solid internet connection. Then plug in the Deco main unit, wait for it to come online, then add each satellite node.

  3. Check for overheating.

TP-Link Deco units placed in enclosed cabinets, under other equipment, or in warm rooms can overheat and become unstable. Ensure each Deco unit has free air circulation on all sides. A Deco unit that is warm to the touch and disconnecting intermittently should be moved to a cooler, more open location.

  4. Reserve IP addresses for key devices.

In the Deco app, go to the connected device and assign a reserved IP address. This prevents DHCP lease renewals from briefly interrupting the device's connection. Useful for smart home devices, work computers, and gaming consoles that are sensitive to brief IP changes.

  5. Check Deco firmware version.

Open the Deco app → Settings → Firmware Upgrade. Install any available firmware updates — TP-Link releases updates that address disconnection issues and improve mesh stability. After updating, perform a full restart of all Deco devices to apply the changes cleanly.

When to Call a Professional

If frequent disconnections continue after replacing the modem and the Deco hardware is confirmed working, contact the ISP — a faulty line or signal level issue is likely.
