Deco Not Connecting / No Internet

TP-Link Mesh WiFi Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

TP-Link Deco not connecting to the internet is most often caused by an ISP outage, the modem needing a restart, or the Deco main unit needing a power cycle. Restart the modem first, then the Deco main unit — always in that order.

Affected Models

  • TP-Link Deco XE75
  • TP-Link Deco X90
  • TP-Link Deco X68
  • TP-Link Deco X55
  • TP-Link Deco M5
  • TP-Link Deco E4

Common Causes

  • ISP outage — the Deco is fine but has no internet to distribute
  • Modem lost sync with the ISP and needs a restart
  • Deco main unit needs a power cycle to re-establish WAN connection
  • Incorrect connection type set in the Deco app — DHCP vs PPPoE vs Static IP
  • Double NAT — modem in router mode conflicting with the Deco acting as a router

How to Fix It

  1. Check if the ISP or modem is the issue.

Check the modem's internet or WAN indicator light — if it is off or red, the ISP connection is down. Call the ISP or check their status page for outages. If the modem shows a working internet connection but the Deco does not, the issue is in the Deco configuration.

  2. Restart the modem first, then the Deco.

Unplug the modem from power for 30 seconds. Wait for the modem to fully reconnect to the ISP — solid internet light confirms this. Then restart the Deco main unit by unplugging it for 10 seconds. The modem must be fully online before the Deco restarts — otherwise the Deco cannot get a valid IP address.

  3. Check the internet connection type in the Deco app.

Open the Tether app or Deco app → Internet → Internet Connection Type. For most home connections: select DHCP (automatic IP). For fibre connections that require a username and password: select PPPoE and enter the ISP credentials. An incorrect connection type causes the Deco to fail to authenticate with the ISP.

  4. Enable bridge mode on the ISP modem if needed.

If the ISP modem is a combined modem/router, it may conflict with the Deco acting as a router — a 'double NAT' situation. Log into the modem's admin interface and enable Bridge Mode, DMZ, or IP Passthrough for the Deco's MAC address. This passes the internet connection directly to the Deco and lets the Deco manage all routing.

  5. Factory reset the Deco main unit.

If all else fails, factory reset the Deco main unit. Use a pin to hold the reset button inside the small hole on the device for 10 seconds until the LED turns amber, then release. After the reset, set up the Deco network fresh in the Tether or Deco app — this resolves configuration corruption.

When to Call a Professional

If the modem shows a working internet connection and the Deco main unit still shows a red LED after a factory reset, contact TP-Link Deco support.
