DHCP Not Enabled
Universal Wi-Fi
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
DHCP is the system that automatically gives your device an IP address when it joins a Wi-Fi network. When DHCP is disabled on your PC, your device cannot get an address from the router and cannot access the internet. This is almost always an accidental setting change that is easy to reverse.
Affected Models
- Windows 10
- Windows 11
- Windows 8.1
Common Causes
- Someone manually set a static IP address in Windows network settings and left DHCP off
- A software installation or VPN app changed the network adapter settings
- A Windows Update caused the DHCP setting to change unexpectedly
- The network adapter was manually configured by a user or IT department
- Malware or a rogue application modified network adapter settings
How to Fix It
-
Open Network Adapter Settings. Press Windows key + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. This opens the list of your network adapters.
ncpa.cpl is a quick shortcut that works on all versions of Windows.
-
Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and choose Properties. In the list, find and double-click 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)'.
This opens the settings that control how your PC gets its IP address.
-
Make sure both options are set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Click OK, then OK again.
These two settings turn DHCP back on. If they were set to manual addresses, that was the problem.
-
Disconnect from Wi-Fi and reconnect. Right-click the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar, disconnect, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect.
Reconnecting forces your PC to request a new IP address with DHCP now enabled.
-
If the problem persists, restart your router and run the Windows network troubleshooter again to confirm DHCP is working.
Sometimes the router's DHCP service also needs a restart to start handing out addresses again.
When to Call a Professional
DHCP Not Enabled is almost always fixable by following the steps below — no technician needed. If enabling DHCP does not fix the problem and your PC still cannot connect, the network adapter itself may have a deeper issue. A computer repair shop can run hardware and driver diagnostics for $50–$80.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is DHCP and why does my PC need it?
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. In plain English, it is the system that automatically assigns your device an IP address when you connect to a network. Without DHCP, your device has no address and cannot communicate on the network — like a house with no house number.
Is it safe to leave DHCP enabled, or should I use a static IP?
For most home users, DHCP is perfectly safe and the right choice. Static IP addresses are only needed for devices that always need the same address, like a home printer or a NAS drive. For laptops and phones, always use DHCP.
Can a VPN turn off DHCP?
Some VPN software installs virtual network adapters that can interfere with your real Wi-Fi adapter's settings. If DHCP was disabled after you installed a VPN, try uninstalling the VPN, re-enabling DHCP, and then reinstalling the VPN. A well-designed VPN should not disable DHCP on your physical adapter.
