No Internet Connection

Universal Wi-Fi

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

This error on iOS means your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi but that Wi-Fi network does not have a working internet connection. Your password is correct and your phone is on the network — the internet service itself is not reachable from the router. This is usually an ISP outage, a router problem, or a DNS failure.

Affected Models

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • iOS 14
  • iOS 15
  • iOS 16
  • iOS 17
  • iOS 18

Common Causes

  • The ISP is experiencing an outage or performing maintenance
  • The modem has lost its connection to the ISP and needs to be restarted
  • The router is connected to the modem but the modem has no internet signal
  • DNS settings on the iPhone or router are broken, preventing websites from loading
  • A data cap on your internet plan has been reached and the ISP is blocking access

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi have internet. If your laptop or another phone also has no internet, the problem is the router or ISP — not your iPhone.

This test determines whether to fix the phone or the internet service.

  2. Restart your modem and router. Unplug both from power for 30 seconds. Plug the modem in first, wait one minute, then plug in the router. Wait two more minutes and test.

Power cycling the modem clears most ISP connection drops.

  3. Toggle Airplane Mode on your iPhone for 15 seconds and then off. This resets all wireless connections including Wi-Fi without losing saved network data.

Airplane Mode toggle is faster than a full restart and often resolves temporary network glitches.

  4. Change the DNS settings on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap (i) next to your network > Configure DNS > Manual. Add 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 as DNS servers.

A broken DNS server makes it appear there is no internet even when the connection is working.

  5. Check your ISP's status page using mobile data (turn off Wi-Fi first). Search for '[ISP name] outage' or visit the ISP's app. If there is an outage, wait for them to resolve it.

ISP outages are one of the most common causes of sudden no-internet situations.

When to Call a Professional

If all devices on your Wi-Fi show no internet, call your ISP. Outages are usually resolved within hours and are not your fault. If only your iPhone is affected, reset its network settings — the fix is usually quick. If your data cap has been reached, you may need to contact your ISP about your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone show full Wi-Fi bars but no internet?

Wi-Fi signal strength (the bars) only measures how well your phone can talk to the router. It has nothing to do with whether the router has internet access. You can have five bars and zero internet if the router's connection to the ISP is down.

Can a data cap cause 'No internet connection' on iOS?

Yes. Some ISP plans throttle or block internet access after a monthly data limit is reached. Log into your ISP account app or website to check your data usage. If you have hit the cap, you may need to upgrade your plan or wait for the billing cycle to reset.

My iPhone shows no internet but Safari still loads some pages. Why?

Safari may be loading pages from its cache — stored copies of previously visited sites. If you try a page you have never visited and get an error, the internet connection is genuinely broken. Also, some apps have their own cached content that works offline.
