Disk Not Initialized

Microsoft Windows

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Windows found a drive but can't read its partition table. This happens with new drives, damaged drives, or drives from other systems. Do NOT initialize the disk yet if it has data — you could erase everything.

Affected Models

  • Windows 11
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows Server 2019

Common Causes

  • The drive is brand new and has never been formatted
  • The drive's partition table got corrupted by a bad shutdown or power cut
  • The drive was formatted on a Linux or Mac system using a different format
  • The drive has physical damage or is starting to fail
  • A virus or malware damaged the drive's boot sector

How to Fix It

  1. Before doing anything, check if the drive has data you need to keep.

If yes, skip to step 4. If no (brand new drive), continue to step 2.

  2. Open Disk Management: right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management.

You will see all your drives listed. The problem drive shows as Not Initialized.

  3. Right-click the disk (not the partition) and choose Initialize Disk.

Choose GPT if your PC is modern (made after 2012). Choose MBR for older PCs.

  4. After initializing, right-click the unallocated space and choose New Simple Volume.

Follow the wizard to format the drive and assign it a drive letter.

  5. If the drive had data, try a free tool like Recuva or TestDisk to recover files first.

Run the recovery scan before initializing — once you initialize, recovery becomes much harder.

When to Call a Professional

Stop and call a data recovery specialist if the drive has important files. Initializing the disk will erase all data and cannot be undone.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I click Initialize Disk, will I lose my files?

Yes — initializing wipes the partition table and makes files inaccessible. Try recovery software first before you initialize. Once initialized, professional data recovery is expensive and not guaranteed.

Can a Not Initialized disk mean the drive is dying?

It can — especially if the drive worked fine before. Listen for clicking or grinding sounds from the drive. If you hear those sounds, the drive has physical damage and needs a specialist.

Which should I pick — GPT or MBR?

Pick GPT for any modern PC made in the last 10 years. Pick MBR only if the drive needs to work in very old hardware. When in doubt, GPT is the better choice.
