File In Use

Microsoft Windows

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Windows is blocking the action because another program has the file open. This could be an app you can see, or a background process you can't. You can find and close whatever is holding the file using free tools.

Affected Models

  • Windows 11
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 7

Common Causes

  • A program you have open is actively using the file
  • A background app like antivirus is scanning or indexing the file
  • A previous program crashed but didn't release its hold on the file
  • Windows Explorer itself is previewing the file in the preview pane
  • A sync app like OneDrive or Dropbox is uploading the file right now

How to Fix It

  1. Close any programs that might have the file open — including web browsers, Office apps, and media players.

Sometimes the fix is that simple. Try the action again after closing apps.

  2. In File Explorer, turn off the Preview Pane. Click View and uncheck Preview pane.

Windows Explorer's preview feature can lock files, especially videos and images.

  3. Pause any sync apps temporarily — OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive.

Right-click the sync app icon in the taskbar tray and choose Pause syncing.

  4. Download and run the free Unlocker or Microsoft's Process Explorer to see what has the file open.

These tools show you exactly which program is locking the file and let you force-close it.

  5. If nothing else works, restart the PC and try the action immediately after Windows starts.

Most background processes haven't started yet right after a fresh boot.

When to Call a Professional

This error almost never requires professional help. If you keep seeing it even after restarting, a deeper file system issue may be involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it say the file is in use when I closed the program?

Some programs are slow to release files after closing. The process might still be running in the background even if the window is gone. Check Task Manager for the program's process and end it there.

Can antivirus software cause this error?

Yes — antivirus programs scan files in the background constantly. Temporarily pause your antivirus and try the action again. If that fixes it, add an exception for that folder in your antivirus settings.

Is it safe to force-unlock a file?

Usually yes for your own personal files. Be careful with system files or program files — force-unlocking those can cause crashes. Only force-unlock files you created yourself.
