Not Heating

Whirlpool Oven

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Whirlpool electric oven that does not heat usually has a burnt-out bake element. A Whirlpool gas oven that does not heat usually has a failed igniter. Both are DIY-friendly repairs.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool Electric Range
  • Whirlpool Gas Range
  • Whirlpool WFE Series
  • Whirlpool WFG Series
  • Whirlpool Gold Oven

Common Causes

  • Failed bake element (electric ovens — most common)
  • Failed oven igniter (gas ovens — most common)
  • Blown oven thermal fuse
  • Failed oven temperature sensor (F3E2)
  • Faulty control board not sending power to the element or igniter

How to Fix It

  1. Inspect the bake element (electric ovens).

Look at the bake element at the bottom of the oven cavity. Visible burn marks, holes, or blistering mean it has failed. Replace it — this is one of the most common and easiest oven repairs.

  2. Test the oven igniter (gas ovens).

The igniter glows orange before the burner lights. If it glows but does not ignite the gas within 90 seconds, or does not glow at all, the igniter has failed. Replace it.

  3. Test the oven temperature sensor.

Disconnect the sensor wire and test resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature it should read approximately 1,080 ohms. Replace if far outside that range.

  4. Test the thermal fuse.

Located behind the back panel of the range — test with a multimeter for continuity. A blown thermal fuse cuts all power to the heating circuit.

When to Call a Professional

If the bake element and igniter are new but the oven still does not heat, a technician should test the control board and wiring harness.
