Getting Stuck

Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Dolphin robotic cleaner that keeps getting stuck is most often caught on pool steps, a drain cover, or tangled in its own cable. For step issues, ensure the cleaner has the correct brush type for your pool shape. For cable tangles, lower the cable float or start the cleaner from the centre of the pool.

Affected Models

  • Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus
  • Dolphin Active 60i
  • Dolphin Quantum
  • Dolphin S300i

Common Causes

  • Cleaner is getting caught on pool steps or in-floor fittings
  • Cable is tangling and pulling the cleaner toward one side
  • Filter basket is full, reducing suction and causing the cleaner to lose wall grip
  • Pool drain cover is creating excessive suction that traps the cleaner

How to Fix It

  1. If the cleaner is getting stuck on steps, add the step-climbing brush attachment if your model supports it. Some Dolphin models come with alternate brush types optimized for pools with steps.

Not all Dolphin models are designed to climb steps. Check your model specification — entry-level models are floor-only cleaners.

  2. If the cable is tangling, let out more cable slack before starting. Lower the cable float closer to the pool surface. Starting the cleaner from the centre of the pool rather than the side reduces tangling.

The Dolphin cable float should sit roughly 50 cm above the water surface. Adjust the float position on the cable to achieve this.

  3. Empty and rinse the filter basket before each cleaning session. A full basket reduces suction significantly, making it harder for the cleaner to maintain wall grip.

  4. If the cleaner is repeatedly drawn to the main drain, check that the drain cover is securely fitted and is an approved anti-entrapment cover. An improperly fitted drain cover creates excessive suction.

Pool drain entrapment is a serious safety issue. If your drain cover is damaged or missing, have it replaced before using the pool or any pool equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Dolphin cleaner circles the same area and never covers the whole pool — why?

A Dolphin that cleans only part of the pool is usually being held by a cable that is too short or tangled, or is stuck in a groove or fitting on the pool floor. Check the cable length — you should have at least 1.5 times the pool diagonal in cable length. Also inspect the pool floor for raised fittings, stickers, or rough patches the cleaner is catching on.
