Cable Tangling / Twisted Cord

Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Dolphin cable that keeps tangling is usually caused by a worn or seized cable swivel that no longer rotates freely. Replacing the swivel allows the cable to unwind during cleaning. Always start the cleaner from the centre of the pool to reduce the circular path that twists the cable.

Affected Models

  • Dolphin Nautilus CC
  • Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus
  • Dolphin S300i
  • Dolphin Premier
  • Dolphin Sigma
  • All Dolphin corded models

Common Causes

  • Worn or seized cable swivel no longer rotating freely
  • Starting from the shallow end creates a consistent circular path that winds the cable
  • Cable float positioned too high, increasing drag-induced twisting
  • Cable length too long for pool size — excess cable coils at the bottom
  • Cable physically damaged with a kink locking the twist

How to Fix It

  1. Inspect the cable swivel.

The swivel is the fitting at the top of the cable near the power supply connector. Hold both ends of the swivel and rotate — it should spin with very little resistance. If it is stiff or seized, the swivel needs to be replaced (available as an inexpensive spare part).

  2. Start the cleaner from the centre of the pool.

Lowering the cleaner into the middle of the pool rather than the shallow end reduces the circular path bias that causes winding. Lower the cleaner vertically rather than dragging it along the wall.

  3. Reposition the cable float.

The floating section of the cable should allow slack near the water surface. If the float is too close to the cleaner, drag causes twisting. Slide the float 6–8 feet from the cleaner end of the cable.

  4. Manually unwind the cable before each use.

Before placing the Dolphin in the water, lay the full cable out on the pool deck and let it naturally unwind and straighten. Do not coil the cable tightly for storage — use the figure-8 pattern.

  5. Shorten the cable if it is too long for your pool.

Excess cable that piles on the pool floor causes tangles. Dolphin recommends the cable be no more than 1.5× the longest dimension of your pool. If the cable is significantly longer, use a cable management clip near the power supply connection to reduce the active length.

When to Call a Professional

If the swivel is replaced and cable still consistently tangles in one specific pattern, a navigation board fault may be causing the cleaner to repeatedly travel the same circular path.
