Check Salt / Inspect Cell

Hayward Salt Chlorinator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Check Salt means salt level is outside the ideal range. Inspect Cell means the salt cell needs cleaning or is nearing end of life. Test salt independently and clean the cell.

Affected Models

  • Hayward AquaRite
  • Hayward AquaRite Pro
  • Hayward AquaRite S3
  • Hayward Turbo Cell

Common Causes

  • Salt level too low or too high
  • Cell plates coated with calcium scale
  • Cell reaching end of life (typically 3-5 years)
  • Water temperature too cold for accurate salt reading
  • Flow too low through the cell

How to Fix It

  1. Test salt level with a separate tester.

Ideal range for Hayward: 2700-3400 ppm. Add salt if low, dilute if high.

  2. Clean the Turbo Cell.

Remove the cell and inspect the plates. If coated with white calcium, soak in a 4:1 water to muriatic acid solution. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.

  3. Check the cell life indicator.

The AquaRite has a cell life display. If it shows low cell life, the cell may need replacement.

  4. Make sure adequate flow is passing through the cell.

The AquaRite needs at least 25-30 GPM flow through the cell. Clean the filter if flow is restricted.
