No Flow

Hayward Pool Equipment

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

No Flow means the Hayward equipment is not detecting water movement through the system. The pump must be running and the filter clean for proper flow. Check pump operation, baskets, and the flow sensor.

Affected Models

  • Hayward AquaRite
  • Hayward Universal H-Series Heater
  • Hayward Super Pump

Common Causes

  • Pool pump not running
  • Filter clogged — restricting flow
  • Pump and skimmer baskets full of debris
  • Flow sensor dirty or stuck
  • Air lock in the pump
  • Suction-side obstruction

How to Fix It

  1. Verify the pump is running.

Look at the pump — is the impeller spinning? Is water moving through the strainer lid? If not, check the timer, breaker, and pump motor.

  2. Empty all baskets — skimmer and pump strainer.

Leaves and debris restrict flow. Empty both baskets regularly.

  3. Check and clean the filter.

Backwash sand/DE filters. Hose off cartridge filters. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of low flow.

  4. Check the flow switch or sensor.

The sensor can get stuck with debris. Locate it in the plumbing and clean or tap gently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can low flow damage pool equipment?

Yes. A heater without flow can overheat and crack the heat exchanger. A salt cell without flow generates concentrated chlorine that damages the cell.

What flow rate does a pool need?

Most residential pools need 40-80 GPM (gallons per minute). Salt cells typically need 25-30 GPM minimum through the cell.
