Variable Speed Pump Error / Fault Code
Hayward Pool Pump
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Hayward variable speed pumps display fault codes as LED flash sequences or on the keypad display. Error E1 means a motor drive fault (often overheating). Error E3 means a priming failure — air in the suction line. Allow the motor to cool for 30 minutes and clear debris from the basket before resetting.
Affected Models
- Hayward TriStar VS Pump
- Hayward EcoStar VS Pump
- Hayward MaxFlo VS Pump
- Hayward Super Pump VS
Common Causes
- Motor drive overheating (E1) — blocked ventilation slots or high ambient temperature
- Priming failure (E3) — air in the suction line, clogged strainer basket, or closed valve
- Overcurrent fault — debris jammed in the impeller
- External automation system sending conflicting speed commands
- Voltage supply too low — check that supply voltage matches pump nameplate rating
How to Fix It
-
Identify the specific error code.
On the pump keypad, the error code is shown as a number or letter-number combination. For models with LED-only displays, count the number of rapid flashes before the pause — that count is the error number. E1 = motor drive, E3 = priming, E5 = current overload, E6 = voltage fault.
-
For E1: Allow the motor to cool and check ventilation.
Turn off the pump and allow at least 30 minutes for the motor to cool. Check that nothing is blocking the ventilation slots on the pump housing — leaves, grass clippings, and pool equipment covers are common blockers. Do not install the pump in a sealed, unventilated enclosure.
-
For E3: Check the strainer basket and suction line.
Open the pump strainer lid and confirm the basket is not clogged. Check that all suction-side valves are fully open. Look for air bubbles entering the strainer pot — this indicates an air leak in the suction line or a low water level.
-
Clear the impeller.
Turn off power to the pump at the breaker. Unscrew the strainer pot and use a straightened wire or impeller clearing tool to feel for debris in the impeller. A clogged impeller causes overcurrent faults and eventual motor damage if left uncorrected.
-
Reset the pump after fixing the fault.
After addressing the underlying cause, power the pump off at the breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. The pump should restart and run through its priming cycle. If the same error code returns immediately, the fault is not yet resolved.
When to Call a Professional
If Error E1 recurs within minutes of restarting after a full cooldown with clear ventilation, the motor drive board (VFD) may be failing and will need replacement by a licensed pool technician.
