Check Salt Level

Pentair Salt Chlorinator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Check Salt means the salt chlorinator has detected that the salt level in the pool water is too low or too high for proper chlorine generation. Test the salt level with a test strip or digital tester and adjust to the recommended 2700-3400 ppm range.

Affected Models

  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC20
  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC40
  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC60

Common Causes

  • Salt level too low — need to add salt
  • Salt level too high — dilute by adding fresh water
  • Salt cell dirty — giving false readings
  • Water temperature too cold for accurate reading
  • Salt sensor on the cell needs cleaning

How to Fix It

  1. Test salt level with a separate test strip or digital meter.

Do not rely only on the chlorinator's reading — test independently. Ideal range: 2700-3400 ppm for Pentair IntelliChlor.

  2. If salt is low: add pool salt.

Use pool-grade salt only (99.8% pure NaCl). Add 30 lbs of salt per 2,000 gallons to raise the level by about 500 ppm. Brush it to dissolve and wait 24 hours before retesting.

  3. If salt is high: partially drain and add fresh water.

You cannot remove salt chemically — only dilution works. Drain 10-20% of pool water and refill with fresh water.

  4. Clean the salt cell.

Remove the cell and soak in a 4:1 water to muriatic acid solution for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Calcium buildup on the plates causes false readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the salt cell?

Every 3-6 months, or whenever you see white calcium buildup on the plates. More frequently in hard water areas.

How long does a salt cell last?

Typically 3-7 years depending on usage and maintenance. A well-maintained cell lasts longer.
