Salt Cell Low / No Output
Pentair Salt Chlorinator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Pentair IntelliChlor showing low or zero output is usually caused by calcium scale on the cell plates blocking chlorine generation. Clean the cell with diluted muriatic acid. Also verify the salt level is between 3000–3500 ppm — too low or too high both reduce output.
Affected Models
- Pentair IntelliChlor IC20
- Pentair IntelliChlor IC40
- Pentair IntelliChlor IC60
Common Causes
- Salt cell plates scaled with calcium (most common)
- Salt level below 2500 ppm
- Water temperature below 60°F
- Cell reaching end of life after 3–5 years
- Flow rate too low — cell shuts off below minimum flow
How to Fix It
-
Test pool salt level with a digital tester.
Pentair IntelliChlor requires 3000–3500 ppm. Do not rely on the panel's salt reading — a scaled cell gives inaccurate salt readings. Use an independent digital tester for accuracy.
-
Remove the cell and inspect the plates for scale.
Hold the cell up to light and look inside. White or grey deposits on the titanium plates reduce or block chlorine generation. If scale is present, proceed with acid cleaning.
-
Clean the cell with diluted muriatic acid.
Mix 1 part muriatic acid with 10 parts water in a cleaning stand. Soak the cell for 5–10 minutes until bubbling stops, then rinse with fresh water. Wear eye protection and gloves.
-
Check the water temperature.
The IntelliChlor automatically reduces output as water temperature drops and stops production below 50°F. If the pool is cold, this is normal — output will return as water warms.
-
Inspect the cell for end-of-life signs.
A cell older than 4–5 years that shows low output despite a clean cell and correct salt has likely reached end of life. The IC20, IC40, and IC60 cells are available from Pentair dealers.
When to Call a Professional
If the cell is clean, salt is correct, temperature is above 65°F, and output is still 0%, the cell has reached end of life and needs replacing. Contact a Pentair dealer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Pentair IntelliChlor cell last?
A Pentair IntelliChlor cell typically lasts 3–5 years depending on pool chemistry, water hardness, and hours of operation. Pools with hard water that causes scale will shorten cell life significantly.
How do I know if my Pentair IntelliChlor cell needs replacing?
If the cell is clean, salt and temperature are correct, and output remains at 0–10% consistently, the cell has failed. Verify by checking the actual chlorine level in the pool with a test kit — if it is dropping despite 100% output setting, the cell cannot generate.
