Salt Low
Zodiac Salt Chlorinator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Salt Low means the pool water does not have enough salt for the chlorinator to generate chlorine. Test the salt level and add pool-grade salt as needed. The AquaPure needs 3000-3500 ppm salt.
Affected Models
- Zodiac AquaPure Ei
- Zodiac AquaPure 1400
- Zodiac AquaPure 700
Common Causes
- Salt level below minimum — need to add salt
- Rain or fresh water diluted the salt concentration
- Splash-out and backwashing removing salted water
- Salt cell dirty — giving inaccurate reading
- New pool fill without enough initial salt
How to Fix It
-
Test salt level with a test strip or digital tester.
Do not rely solely on the chlorinator's reading. Ideal: 3000-3500 ppm for Zodiac AquaPure.
-
Add pool-grade salt.
Use only pool salt (99.8% pure NaCl). Add 30 lbs per 2,000 gallons to raise salt by about 500 ppm. Brush salt along the bottom to help it dissolve.
-
Wait 24 hours after adding salt before retesting.
Salt takes time to fully dissolve and circulate. Run the pump continuously for 24 hours after adding salt.
-
Clean the salt cell if the reading seems wrong.
Calcium scale on the cell plates causes inaccurate salt readings. Clean with a mild acid wash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does rain lower salt levels?
Yes. Rain dilutes the pool water, lowering salt concentration. After heavy rain, retest salt and add more if needed.
Can I use table salt?
No. Table salt contains anti-caking agents and iodine that can damage the cell and stain the pool. Always use pool-grade salt.
