What Does This Error Mean?

A Zodiac/Jandy salt system reading salt too high (over 4000 ppm) usually means too much salt was added at once or the pool was repeatedly topped off without accounting for retained salt. The only correction is partial dilution — drain a portion of the pool and refill with fresh water. Target 3200–3400 ppm for AquaPure systems.

Common Causes

  • Too much salt added at a single dose
  • Pool topped off repeatedly without re-testing salt level
  • Backwash water replaced with fresh water — salt level rises as pool volume changes
  • Salt sensor reading incorrectly and needs recalibration
  • Recent water loss from splash-out not properly accounted for before last salt addition

How to Fix It

  1. Verify the reading with a manual test.

    Before draining water, confirm the high salt reading with a digital salinity meter or salt test strips. AquaPure sensors can drift after extended use. If the manual test shows normal levels (2700–3400 ppm), the sensor may need recalibration — not the salt level.

  2. Partially drain and refill the pool.

    Salt cannot be removed chemically — the only solution is dilution. Drain 10–25% of your pool volume and refill with fresh water. Retest the salt level after the water mixes thoroughly (run the pump for 2–4 hours before retesting).

  3. Recalibrate the salt sensor.

    After dilution and confirmed normal salt levels, the Zodiac/Jandy display may still show high salt if the sensor is offset. Consult the AquaPure manual for the sensor calibration procedure, or use the Jandy app to recalibrate.

  4. Do not add salt until levels drop below 3400 ppm.

    Avoid adding any salt or saltwater-based chlorine until the level is confirmed below the target range. Document the pool volume and use a salt calculator to determine exact additions for future adjustments.

  5. Check for evaporation top-up practices.

    If your pool is connected to an autofill, confirm it is working and adding fresh water. Evaporation removes water but not salt — repeatedly adding fresh water to a high-evaporation pool is the most common cause of gradual salt accumulation.

When to Call a Professional

If salt readings remain high after confirmed dilution and the system still shows a high salt alert, have a pool professional calibrate the salt sensor — sensors drift over time and can give false high readings.
