Battery Not Charging
Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Advice UPS battery not charging usually means the sealed lead-acid battery has failed and can no longer accept a charge — this is common after 3–5 years. A battery that reads 0% after 24 hours of connected mains power almost certainly needs replacement.

Common Causes
- Battery has reached end of life — sulfation prevents it from accepting charge
- Deep discharge during a long power cut — battery dropped below recovery threshold
- Battery fuse blown inside the UPS — battery is disconnected from charger circuit
- Charger circuit fault — charging electronics failed
- New replacement battery installed incorrectly — connector reversed or not fully seated
How to Fix It
-
Allow 24 hours of connected mains to charge.
Sealed lead-acid batteries in UPS units charge slowly — a fully depleted battery can take 8–24 hours to reach full charge. Leave the UPS connected to mains with a light load for 24 hours before concluding the battery is not charging.
-
Test the battery voltage.
With the UPS powered off and disconnected from mains, carefully open the battery access panel. Use a multimeter to measure the battery terminal voltage. A 12V battery reading below 10V has been sulfated and will not recover — it needs replacement. A reading of 11–12V means the battery can potentially still be charged.
-
Replace the battery.
Most Advice UPS batteries are standard sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries available from electronics suppliers. Check the battery label for the voltage (12V) and amp-hour rating (7Ah, 9Ah, etc.). Install the replacement battery with the correct polarity — red terminal to positive, black to negative.
-
Check battery connector and fuse.
Inside the UPS, confirm the battery connector is fully pushed onto the battery terminals. Some models have an inline fuse on the battery lead — check if it has blown and replace with the correct rated fuse.
-
Condition the new battery.
After installing a new battery, leave the UPS on mains for 24 hours before running a battery test. A new battery at 50% charge from storage will not give accurate backup time readings until it has been fully charged.
When to Call a Professional
If a new battery still does not charge after correct installation, the UPS charger circuit has failed. Contact Advice support or a UPS service center for charger board repair.
