Not Switching to Battery / Transfer Failure

Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

An Advice UPS failing to switch to battery almost always means the internal battery has died and has no charge left to supply. Run a self-test to confirm battery status, then replace the battery if the test fails.

Affected Models

  • Advice UPS Line-Interactive Series
  • Advice UPS Online Series
  • Advice UPS (all models)

Common Causes

  • Battery fully depleted — no charge available to power the transfer
  • Battery end of life — sealed lead-acid cells cannot hold a charge after 3–5 years
  • Transfer relay failed — mechanical relay that switches from mains to battery is stuck
  • Input voltage fluctuation too fast for the AVR to initiate transfer in time
  • Self-test disabled — battery has never been exercised and is flat

How to Fix It

  1. Run a manual self-test.

Press and hold the self-test button on the front panel for 3 seconds to start a battery test. The UPS should switch to battery briefly and display a pass or fail result. A failed result confirms the battery is the cause of the transfer failure.

  2. Check battery charge level.

If the UPS was recently installed or the battery was deeply discharged, it may need 24 hours of continuous mains connection to build enough charge for a transfer. Do not test or rely on the UPS within the first 24 hours after installation or after a complete discharge.

  3. Replace the battery.

Sealed lead-acid UPS batteries last 3–5 years under normal conditions. Check the battery manufacturing date (usually printed on a label on the battery itself) and replace if over 4 years old. Use a compatible replacement battery matching the original voltage and Ah rating.

  4. Simulate a power failure to test the transfer.

With the UPS connected and battery confirmed charged, unplug the UPS from the wall while devices are running. The UPS should switch to battery instantly with no interruption to connected devices. If devices lose power during the unplugging test, the transfer relay is faulty.

  5. Check for a fault light or error code.

Advice UPS models display a fault light or error code when the transfer circuit detects a problem. Refer to the Advice UPS user manual for the specific fault code meaning for your model. A persistent fault light after battery replacement indicates an internal electronic fault.

When to Call a Professional

If a new battery is installed and the UPS still does not switch to battery during a test or actual power failure, the transfer relay or control board has failed. Contact Advice UPS support for service.
