Runtime Too Short

Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Advice UPS runtime shorter than expected is almost always caused by an aged battery that has lost capacity, or equipment drawing more watts than the UPS was sized for. Replace the battery if it is over 3 years old — runtime will not improve without a new battery.

Affected Models

  • Advice UPS Line-Interactive Series
  • Advice UPS Online Series
  • Advice UPS (all models)

Common Causes

  • Battery aged — sealed lead-acid batteries lose capacity after 3–5 years, especially in warm climates
  • Connected load too high — more equipment plugged in than the UPS was sized for
  • Battery stored or operated in high temperatures — heat accelerates capacity loss
  • Calibration issue — UPS runtime estimate inaccurate, real runtime may be better than displayed
  • Battery not fully charged — UPS was not connected to mains for sufficient charge time

How to Fix It

  1. Calculate your actual connected load.

Sum the wattage of every device plugged into the UPS. Compare to the UPS rated watt output. UPS runtime drops rapidly as load increases — a UPS sized for 100W load will have much shorter runtime if you are drawing 300W.

  2. Replace the battery.

UPS batteries in office or home environments lose 20–30% capacity per year after the 3rd year. If the battery is 4+ years old, even a healthy-appearing battery will have severely reduced capacity. Replacement batteries for Advice UPS models are standard SLA batteries available from electronics retailers.

  3. Reduce the load on the UPS.

Connect only essential devices (computer CPU and monitor) to the UPS battery outlets. Move printers, external hard drives, and phone chargers to a standard power strip not connected to the UPS. Even modest load reductions significantly extend runtime.

  4. Charge the battery for 24 hours.

If the UPS was recently installed or the battery recently replaced, the battery may not be fully charged yet. Leave the UPS connected to mains for 24 hours with a light load to allow full charge. Test runtime only after a complete charge cycle.

  5. Run the UPS self-test.

Most Advice UPS models have a self-test function (press and hold the test button or trigger via management software). The self-test transfers to battery for a few seconds to verify battery health. If the UPS immediately warns of a battery fault during the self-test, battery replacement is required.

When to Call a Professional

If a new battery gives the same short runtime, the load may exceed what the UPS battery can support, or the charger is not fully charging the new battery. Contact Advice support.
