Shutdown Software Not Working / Auto Shutdown Failing
Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Advice UPS shutdown software failing to communicate is usually caused by the USB cable not being detected, or the monitoring service not running on the PC. Check Device Manager for the UPS HID device and restart the monitoring service.
Affected Models
- Advice UPS Line-Interactive Series
- Advice UPS Online Series
- Advice UPS (all models with USB interface)
Common Causes
- USB cable between UPS and PC not recognized — cable or port issue
- Shutdown monitoring service stopped or not set to start automatically
- Software version incompatible with the current Windows version
- Serial port assignment changed after a driver update
- USB HID driver for the UPS not installed in Device Manager
How to Fix It
-
Check Device Manager for the UPS USB device.
Open Device Manager (press Win + X, select Device Manager). Look under Human Interface Devices for an HID UPS Battery or similar device. If it shows with a warning icon, uninstall it, unplug and replug the USB cable, and let Windows reinstall the driver.
-
Restart the shutdown monitoring service.
Open Windows Services (services.msc) and look for the Advice UPS or power management service. Right-click it and select Restart. Also ensure the service Startup Type is set to Automatic so it runs after every reboot.
-
Try a different USB cable and port.
Unplug the USB cable from both the UPS and PC, then reconnect with a different cable if available. Also try a different USB port on the PC — a faulty port prevents the UPS from appearing as a detected device. Use a USB Type-A to Type-B cable (the square-plug type used for printers).
-
Reinstall the UPS monitoring software.
Download the latest version of the Advice UPS monitoring software from the Advice website. Uninstall the existing version first, then run the fresh installer. During setup, confirm the USB connection option is selected.
-
Test the auto-shutdown by simulating a power failure.
With the software connected and configured, unplug the UPS from the wall to simulate a power failure. The software should detect the on-battery state and begin the shutdown countdown. If the PC does not receive the shutdown signal, check the shutdown threshold settings inside the monitoring software.
When to Call a Professional
If the UPS does not appear in Device Manager after trying multiple USB cables and ports, the USB interface hardware inside the UPS may have failed. Contact Advice UPS support.
