USB Port Not Detected / Communication Port Error
Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Advice UPS USB port not detected is usually caused by a faulty USB cable, a dead PC USB port, or the HID driver not installing correctly. Try a different USB cable and port, then check Device Manager for the UPS device.
Affected Models
- Advice UPS Line-Interactive Series with USB
- Advice UPS Online Series with USB
- All Advice UPS models with USB communication port
Common Causes
- USB cable faulty or using a charge-only cable that lacks data pins
- PC USB port not functioning — try a different port
- HID UPS driver not installed — device appears with a warning in Device Manager
- Monitoring software looking at the wrong COM port after USB reassignment
- UPS USB interface module hardware fault after a surge event
How to Fix It
-
Try a different USB cable.
Use a USB Type-A to Type-B cable (square plug — the same type used for printers). Some USB cables are charge-only and do not carry data signals. A data-capable replacement cable from a printer or scanner often resolves detection failures immediately.
-
Try a different USB port on the PC.
Plug the UPS USB cable into a different USB port on the computer. Avoid USB hubs — connect directly to a port on the motherboard. If the UPS appears in Device Manager on the new port, the original port was faulty.
-
Check Device Manager for the UPS device.
Open Device Manager and expand Human Interface Devices. The UPS should appear as an HID UPS Battery or similar device. If it shows with a yellow warning icon, right-click it, select Update Driver, and let Windows search automatically.
-
Reinstall the monitoring software.
Uninstall the Advice UPS monitoring software from Windows Apps & Features. Download the latest version from the Advice website and reinstall. The installer typically installs the correct HID driver and configures the communication port automatically.
-
Test the USB port on the UPS itself.
Connect a known-working USB device (such as a USB flash drive) to the same USB port on the UPS if it has multiple ports. If nothing is detected on any USB port of the UPS, the USB hub inside the UPS may have failed. This requires professional repair or unit replacement.
When to Call a Professional
If the UPS does not appear in Device Manager after using multiple confirmed-working USB cables and PC ports, the USB interface chip inside the UPS may have been damaged. Contact Advice UPS support.
