What Does This Error Mean?

A persistently beeping APC UPS is in a fault condition — the most common cause is a failing battery, an overload, or a site wiring fault. Identify the alarm type by checking the LED indicators and address the root cause to silence the alarm permanently.

Common Causes

  • Failing battery — Replace Battery alarm beeps every 5 seconds
  • UPS running on battery during a power failure — continuous beeping is normal in this state
  • Overload condition — connected devices drawing too much power
  • Site wiring fault detected — incorrect grounding or wiring at the wall outlet
  • High internal temperature triggering the thermal alarm

How to Fix It

  1. Identify the alarm pattern.

    APC UPS units use distinct beep patterns for different conditions. A beep every 5 seconds typically means Replace Battery. Four rapid beeps mean overload. A continuous alarm with normal mains power indicates a serious fault. Check the APC manual for your model's specific alarm code table.

  2. Silence a Replace Battery alarm temporarily.

    Press the Test or Alarm Silence button once to mute a Replace Battery or low battery alarm. The alarm will resume after a period of time if the battery is not replaced. The only permanent fix for a Replace Battery alarm is installing a new battery cartridge.

  3. Remove load to clear an overload alarm.

    Unplug the highest-wattage devices from the battery-backup outlets until the alarm stops. Laser printers, space heaters, and high-draw monitors are common overload causes. Move non-critical devices to the surge-only outlets if your model has them.

  4. Address a site wiring fault.

    A Site Wiring Fault LED with normal mains power means the wall outlet has an electrical wiring issue — often missing ground or reversed wiring. Test the outlet with a plug-in circuit tester available at hardware stores. Do not rely on a UPS on a circuit with a confirmed wiring fault — have an electrician inspect it.

  5. Allow the UPS to cool.

    If the UPS enclosure is hot to the touch and the fan runs loudly, it may be in a thermal alarm state. Unplug the UPS from the wall and remove all loads. Allow it to cool for 30 minutes in a ventilated area with the ventilation slots unobstructed, then reconnect.

When to Call a Professional

If the alarm cannot be attributed to any of the known fault patterns and the UPS shuts off output unexpectedly, the internal control board may have failed. Contact APC support or consider unit replacement.
