No Output

APC UPS

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

APC UPS no output during a power outage means the UPS is not transferring to battery power. The most common causes are a fully depleted battery, an overload that tripped the output, or the UPS being in bypass mode. Check the front panel display or PowerChute for the specific fault.

Affected Models

  • APC Back-UPS BE and BX series
  • APC Back-UPS Pro series
  • APC Smart-UPS series
  • APC Easy-UPS series

Common Causes

  • Battery fully depleted from a previous long outage — not yet recharged
  • Output overload — total load on UPS exceeds its VA rating
  • UPS in bypass mode — not transferring to battery
  • Replace Battery warning was ignored and battery has completely failed
  • Output breaker tripped due to a short circuit or overload

How to Fix It

  1. Check the UPS display for any active alarms.

The front panel LEDs or display on most APC UPS units will show a Replace Battery indicator, overload bar, or bypass symbol. Identify the specific fault before acting — the fix differs for each one.

  2. Check the total load vs the UPS rating.

Add up the wattage of everything plugged into the UPS battery-backed outlets. The total must be below the UPS watt rating (not just the VA rating). If overloaded, unplug non-essential equipment and reset the UPS.

  3. Check the output circuit breaker.

Some APC UPS models have a small reset button or breaker on the back panel. If the breaker has tripped (button popped out), press it to reset. If it trips again immediately, disconnect load equipment first.

  4. Let the battery recharge after a long outage.

After a prolonged mains failure that drained the battery completely, the UPS needs 6–12 hours of mains power to recharge before it can provide battery backup again.

  5. Replace the battery if the Replace Battery indicator is on.

A fully failed battery will not supply any power during an outage even though the UPS appears functional. Order the correct APC RBC for your model and replace it.

When to Call a Professional

If the UPS shows no faults on the display but still does not power equipment during an outage, the internal transfer relay may have failed. Have the unit inspected by an APC-authorised repairer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my APC UPS beep but not power my equipment during an outage?

Beeping during an outage without supplying power usually means the battery is dead or the output is overloaded. Check the display for a Replace Battery or Overload indicator.

Can I use an APC UPS with a dead battery as a surge protector?

Yes, the UPS will still provide surge and spike protection with a failed battery — it just won't supply backup power during an outage. Replace the battery to restore full protection.
