PowerChute Not Connecting / UPS Not Detected by Software

APC UPS

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

APC PowerChute not detecting the UPS is usually caused by the USB connection not being recognized or the PowerChute background service not running. Restart the PowerChute service in Windows Services and replug the USB cable.

Affected Models

  • All APC UPS models with USB interface
  • APC Back-UPS with USB port
  • APC Smart-UPS with USB port

Common Causes

  • USB cable between UPS and PC not recognized — cable or port fault
  • PowerChute background service stopped or crashed
  • Wrong COM port assigned after a driver update or USB reconnection
  • PowerChute version incompatible with the current Windows or macOS version
  • APC HID USB driver not installed correctly in Device Manager

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the PowerChute service.

Open Windows Services by pressing Win + R, typing services.msc, and pressing Enter. Find APC PBE Agent or the APC PowerChute service in the list. Right-click it and select Restart. If the service fails to start, check the Windows Event Log for an error message.

  2. Replug the USB cable and try a different port.

Unplug the USB cable from both the UPS and the PC, then reconnect it firmly. Try a different USB port on the PC — a dead or malfunctioning port prevents the UPS from appearing as a device. Use the original APC USB cable if possible, as aftermarket cables can cause detection issues.

  3. Check Device Manager for the APC UPS device.

Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and look under Human Interface Devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. The APC UPS should appear as a HID UPS Battery device. If it shows with a warning icon, right-click it, select Uninstall Device, then replug the USB cable to reinstall the driver.

  4. Reinstall PowerChute.

Download the latest version of PowerChute Personal Edition from the APC website. Uninstall the existing version first from Windows Apps & Features, then run the fresh installer. Select the USB connection type during setup. Version mismatches with newer Windows versions are a common cause of connection failure.

  5. Verify the USB interface port on the UPS.

APC UPS units use a USB Type-B port for PC connection (the square type used for printers). Confirm you are using a USB Type-A to Type-B cable, not a phone charging cable. If the port on the UPS is physically damaged, PowerChute cannot detect the device.

When to Call a Professional

If the APC UPS USB port does not appear in Device Manager after trying multiple USB ports and cables, the USB interface hardware inside the UPS may have failed. Contact APC support.
