Runtime Too Short / Battery Backup Fails Early
APC UPS
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Short APC UPS runtime is almost always caused by a battery that has reached end of life — sealed lead-acid batteries typically last 3–5 years. Replace the battery cartridge for your model to restore full backup time.
Affected Models
- APC Back-UPS 650
- APC Back-UPS Pro 1500
- APC Smart-UPS 1500
- APC Back-UPS ES series
- All APC UPS models
Common Causes
- Battery aged past 3–5 years — sealed lead-acid cells hold less charge as they degrade
- Battery deeply discharged multiple times, permanently reducing capacity
- High ambient temperature accelerating battery degradation
- Connected devices drawing more power than the UPS battery can sustain
- Battery never fully recharged between power events due to frequent outages
How to Fix It
-
Check battery age.
APC recommends replacing the backup battery every 3–5 years. Go to apc.com, enter your UPS model number, and find the correct replacement battery cartridge (RBC number). If the battery is over 5 years old, replacement is almost certainly the cause of short runtime.
-
Calculate connected load vs UPS capacity.
Add up the wattage of all devices plugged into the battery-backup outlets. Keep the total below 80% of the UPS rated watt capacity. A laser printer, space heater, or high-wattage monitor can reduce runtime to under a minute even on a healthy battery.
-
Run a self-test to check battery health.
On APC units with a test button, press and hold it for 3 seconds to start a self-test. The UPS switches to battery briefly and reports pass or Replace Battery. A failed self-test with a recently replaced battery indicates a charging circuit fault.
-
Allow 16–24 hours for a full recharge.
After any power event, the APC UPS needs 16–24 hours to fully recharge the battery. Do not run self-tests back-to-back — each test partially discharges the battery before it can recover. Leave the UPS connected and powered on overnight for a full charge.
-
Replace the battery cartridge.
APC replacement batteries are identified by an RBC number (e.g., RBC17) printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment. Order the correct RBC for your model from APC or an authorized supplier. Replacement takes under 5 minutes — no tools are required on most APC models.
When to Call a Professional
Runtime calculation and battery replacement are user-serviceable tasks. If a brand-new APC replacement battery still provides very short runtime, the UPS charging circuit may be faulty. Contact APC support.
