USB Not Detected
APC UPS
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
APC UPS not detected by the computer means PowerChute software cannot communicate with the UPS over the USB cable. The most common causes are a loose USB cable, a driver that needs reinstalling, or the wrong USB cable type being used. A standard USB Type-A to Type-B (printer-style) cable is required — not a USB extension cable.
Affected Models
- APC Back-UPS BE and BX series
- APC Back-UPS Pro BR series
- APC Smart-UPS SMT series
- APC Easy-UPS BV series
Common Causes
- USB cable loose at the UPS end or the computer end
- USB cable is a charge-only cable — lacks the data wires required for communication
- PowerChute software not installed or needs reinstalling
- USB driver conflict — the HID UPS driver not assigned correctly in Device Manager
- USB port on the computer in a low-power state or the port has failed
How to Fix It
-
Check the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
The UPS uses a standard USB Type-A to Type-B (square connector) cable — the same type used by many printers. Unplug and replug both ends. Do not use a USB extension cable as these can cause communication failures.
-
Try a different USB cable.
Some USB cables are charge-only and lack the data wires required for UPS communication. Test with a known-good USB Type-A to Type-B data cable. Printer USB cables are a reliable substitute.
-
Try a different USB port on the computer.
USB ports can fail or be placed in low-power states by Windows power management. Try a port directly on the motherboard (rear ports on a desktop) rather than a hub or front-panel port.
-
Reinstall APC PowerChute software.
Uninstall PowerChute from Control Panel → Programs, restart the computer, then download and install the latest version of PowerChute Personal Edition or Business Edition from APC's website. This reinstalls the USB HID driver.
-
Check Device Manager for the UPS entry.
In Windows Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager), look under 'Batteries' for 'APC UPS' or 'HID UPS Battery'. If it shows with a yellow exclamation mark, right-click → Update Driver → Search automatically. If absent, the cable or USB port is the problem.
When to Call a Professional
If the UPS is not detected on any computer with multiple known-good cables, the USB communication circuit inside the UPS may have failed. Contact APC support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need PowerChute software for the UPS to work?
No. The UPS provides power protection with no software installed. PowerChute adds safe shutdown capability, runtime monitoring, and event logging. The UPS will operate normally without it.
Does Windows automatically detect an APC UPS?
Yes, Windows includes a built-in HID UPS driver and will show basic battery and status information in Control Panel → Power Options even without PowerChute installed. If the UPS does not appear there, the USB connection is the problem.
