95
Brother Printer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Brother error 95 means the printer cannot detect a toner cartridge. Either no cartridge is installed, the cartridge is not seated properly, or the cartridge chip cannot be read. This prevents any printing until the cartridge is recognized.
Affected Models
- Brother HL-L2300D
- Brother HL-L2350DW
- Brother MFC-L2710DW
- Brother DCP-L2550DW
- Brother MFC-L2750DW
Common Causes
- The toner cartridge is not pushed all the way into its slot and the contact is not being made
- The toner cartridge's electronic chip is dirty, smudged, or damaged
- The cartridge is incompatible with this specific printer model
- The toner cartridge is counterfeit or has a defective chip that the printer cannot read
- The cartridge contacts inside the printer are dusty or corroded
How to Fix It
-
Open the front cover, remove the toner cartridge and drum assembly, and separate the toner cartridge from the drum.
The toner and drum typically come out as one unit and then separate by pressing a release tab.
-
Locate the small electronic chip on the toner cartridge — it is usually a green, gold, or silver circuit on one end of the cartridge.
This chip communicates toner level and cartridge identity to the printer.
-
Gently wipe the chip's contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth. Also wipe the matching contacts inside the drum unit where the chip meets.
Do not use liquids. Dry cleaning is sufficient and safe for the chip contacts.
-
Reinstall the toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it click. Then reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the printer.
Make sure the assembly slides in all the way. A partial insertion will not make proper contact with the printer's sensors.
-
If using a third-party cartridge, try a genuine Brother cartridge to test. Some compatible cartridges have chips that are not fully recognized by Brother printers.
If the genuine cartridge is detected, the compatible cartridge's chip was the issue. Try a different brand of compatible cartridge.
When to Call a Professional
Error 95 is usually resolved by cleaning cartridge contacts or replacing the cartridge. If a genuine Brother cartridge still triggers error 95, the printer's cartridge detect sensor may be faulty. Contact Brother Support at 1-877-276-8437 for warranty service or a sensor inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the chip on a toner cartridge actually do?
The chip stores information about the cartridge — type, toner level, manufacture date, and regional code. The printer reads this chip to verify the cartridge is correct and to track how much toner is remaining. If the chip is unreadable, the printer assumes no cartridge is installed and shows an error like 95.
Can I use third-party toner cartridges in a Brother printer?
Yes. Brother printers accept compatible third-party toner cartridges. However, chip compatibility can be inconsistent across brands. If a compatible cartridge shows error 95, try a different brand or switch to genuine Brother cartridges. Using third-party cartridges does not void your printer warranty under US law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act).
What if cleaning the contacts does not fix error 95?
If the error persists with a clean, properly seated genuine cartridge, the printer's cartridge detect sensor or contact assembly may be faulty. This is a hardware repair — contact Brother Support or a printer repair shop. For printers under warranty, Brother covers sensor repairs at no charge.
