A9
Brother Printer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Brother error A9 means paper has jammed inside the main body of the printer — typically near the fuser unit or output path. This is an internal jam that requires opening the printer to access. Never force the paper or you risk tearing it and leaving fragments that cause repeated jams.
Affected Models
- Brother MFC-L8900CDW
- Brother HL-L9310CDW
- Brother MFC-L9570CDW
- Brother HL-L8360CDW
- Most Brother laser printer models
Common Causes
- Paper got stuck in the fuser unit where heat and pressure fuse toner to the page
- A sheet folded or crumpled as it entered the output section of the paper path
- Multiple sheets fed at once (multi-feed) and jammed inside the print engine
- The fuser's output rollers are worn and not gripping paper to pull it through
- A label, envelope, or thick media shifted and jammed at the fuser entry
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the printer and unplug it. Wait at least 30 minutes for the fuser to cool before opening the printer and reaching inside.
The fuser operates at 175–200°C. Even after turning off, it retains heat. Do not rush this step.
-
Open the front cover of the printer. This provides access to the drum and toner area. Look for paper that may have folded or crumpled. Remove it slowly, pulling in the direction of the paper path (toward the output).
The front cover gives the most access for jams near the beginning and middle of the paper path.
-
Open the rear cover to access the fuser area. The jammed paper may be partially through the fuser. Pull it out slowly and gently toward the rear of the printer.
Some models have a green lever inside the rear cover that releases the roller pressure, making jam removal much easier.
-
Inspect for paper fragments. After the main jam is cleared, use a flashlight to look throughout the paper path. Check the fuser area and the output rollers for any torn pieces.
A single forgotten fragment will cause repeated A9 jams until it is removed.
-
Close all covers, reconnect power, and turn the printer on. Print a test page to confirm the jam is fully cleared and the printer is working.
If A9 appears again on the test page, there is still a fragment inside. Repeat the inspection with good lighting.
When to Call a Professional
Most A9 jams can be cleared by the user by accessing the front and rear covers. If the paper tore inside the fuser and fragments remain, call a Brother-authorized technician. Never reach into the fuser area on a hot printer — risk of burns.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is A9 different from A7 and A8 on Brother printers?
These errors indicate where in the paper path the jam occurred. A7 is a jam at the paper tray or feed entry — the beginning of the path. A8 is a jam in the auto-duplex unit — the paper flip mechanism for double-sided printing. A9 is a jam inside the main printer body — near or past the fuser in the internal paper path. A9 jams are generally harder to access and clear than A7 jams.
I cleared the A9 jam but toner is smearing on my prints. Why?
Smearing after a jam usually means the fuser rollers were damaged when paper was forced through. The fuser uses heat and pressure to permanently bond toner to paper. If the rollers are scratched or indented from a jam, they can no longer fuse toner evenly. A damaged fuser needs replacement — contact a Brother technician.
How can I prevent A9 jams from happening again?
Use only paper types and weights within the printer's specifications. Store paper in a dry location — humid paper is more likely to crumple in the fuser area. Never print on paper that is already slightly bent or wrinkled. If the printer fuses irregularly (toner smears, partial adhesion), service the fuser before it causes jams.
