Drum End Soon / Replace Drum

Brother Laser Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Brother 'Drum End Soon' or 'Replace Drum Unit' means the drum unit (a separate component from the toner cartridge) has reached the end of its rated lifespan. The drum unit is not the toner — it is a separate component that transfers the toner onto the paper. Replacing it restores full print quality.

Affected Models

  • Brother HL-L series laser printers
  • Brother MFC-L series laser multifunction printers
  • Brother DCP-L series
  • Brother HL-2300D
  • Brother MFC-7360N and similar

Common Causes

  • Drum unit has completed its rated page count (typically 12,000–30,000 pages depending on model)
  • Drum counter not reset after last drum replacement
  • Drum unit physically damaged — scratched or contaminated

How to Fix It

  1. Understand the difference between drum and toner.

Brother laser printers use two separate components: the toner cartridge (which holds the ink powder) and the drum unit (which transfers the toner image onto paper). The toner is replaced more frequently (every 1,000–3,000 pages). The drum lasts much longer (12,000–30,000 pages) but costs more to replace (£30–£80). When Brother says 'Replace Drum', it means the drum unit, not the toner.

  2. Try cleaning the drum first.

Before replacing the drum, try cleaning it. Remove the drum unit from the printer. Slowly rotate the drum while looking at the surface — you may see scratches, marks, or a white patch from paper dust. Gently wipe the green drum surface with a lint-free dry cloth. Do not touch the green drum surface with your fingers — fingerprints degrade print quality.

  3. Purchase and install a replacement drum unit.

Buy a genuine Brother drum unit for your model — the drum unit number is printed in the printer's manual and on the drum unit itself (e.g. DR-2400, DR-3300). Remove the old drum, slide the toner cartridge out of it, and install the toner cartridge into the new drum unit. Insert the drum unit assembly back into the printer.

  4. Reset the drum counter after replacement.

After installing the new drum unit, you must reset the drum counter or the warning will persist. The reset procedure varies by model. On most Brother laser printers: open the front cover with the printer on, then press and hold the OK or Clear button for several seconds until the display shows 'Drum Replaced'. Check your model's manual for the exact reset steps.

  5. Determine if the counter just needs resetting.

If you recently replaced the drum but forgot to reset the counter, the warning will appear even though the drum is new. Perform the counter reset as described above and the warning will clear without purchasing a new drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using my Brother printer after the drum warning?

Yes — 'Drum End Soon' is a warning, not a stop. Brother printers continue to print after this warning appears, typically for hundreds more pages. When 'Replace Drum Unit' appears (the second, more urgent message), the printer will eventually stop. Print quality degradation (white streaks, banding, grey background) is the main practical sign that the drum needs replacement.
