1600

Canon Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Canon error 1600 means the printer cannot detect a correctly installed ink cartridge. The printer may not recognize a new cartridge that was just installed, or an existing cartridge may have shifted out of its seat. This error can also appear when using refilled or third-party ink cartridges that the printer does not recognize. The printer will refuse to print until a recognized cartridge is properly installed.

Affected Models

  • Canon PIXMA IP2820
  • Canon PIXMA MG2522
  • Canon PIXMA TS202
  • Canon PIXMA E410
  • Canon PIXMA MG3022

Common Causes

  • Ink cartridge is not fully clicked into its slot in the carriage
  • The cartridge was installed while the printer was off, preventing recognition
  • Third-party or refilled ink cartridge is not recognized by the printer
  • Cartridge contacts are dirty, preventing the printer from reading the chip
  • The orange protective tape was not removed from the cartridge before installation

How to Fix It

  1. Open the printer cover and check that the orange or yellow protective tape has been removed from the new ink cartridge. This tape must come off before the cartridge works.

New cartridges have protective orange tape covering the nozzles and sometimes an orange plastic clip on the ink port — both must be removed.

  2. Remove the cartridge from its slot. Press it back in firmly until you hear and feel a click. A cartridge that is not fully seated will not make contact with the printer's electrical connectors.

Do not just push gently — press until the cartridge clicks into place positively.

  3. If using a third-party cartridge, try an original Canon cartridge in the same slot. Third-party and refilled cartridges may not be recognized. Some Canon printers display 1600 for any non-original cartridge.

Canon printers are designed to work best with genuine Canon cartridges. Third-party ink quality and chip compatibility vary widely.

  4. Clean the cartridge's electrical contacts and the printer carriage contacts. Gently wipe both sets of gold contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water.

Ink residue on contacts prevents the printer from reading the cartridge chip correctly.

  5. Turn the printer off completely, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on with the cartridge installed. Some cartridge recognition issues resolve with a full power cycle during which the cartridge is present.

Always install cartridges with the printer powered on and the carriage in the center access position.

When to Call a Professional

Error 1600 is almost always a user-fixable issue. If genuine Canon cartridges repeatedly show 1600 even after proper installation, the cartridge slot contacts may need cleaning or the carriage may have a fault. A Canon service center can clean or replace the carriage contact assembly if cleaning does not help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I override Canon error 1600 to print with a third-party cartridge?

On some Canon models, pressing the Stop/Reset button once when the error shows will let you print with an unrecognized cartridge. However, ink quality, color accuracy, and print head longevity may be affected by third-party inks. If you choose to override, do so at your own risk.

Is error 1600 different from error 1401?

They are closely related. Both indicate a cartridge recognition problem. 1401 typically means a cartridge is entirely absent from the slot, while 1600 indicates the cartridge is present but not being read correctly. The troubleshooting steps are very similar for both.

Why does my new Canon cartridge show error 1600?

First, confirm the protective orange tape is fully removed. Second, ensure the cartridge is fully clicked in. If a genuine Canon cartridge shows 1600 after both of those checks, it may be defective. Return it under warranty for a replacement.
