2500
Canon Printer
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Canon error 2500 is a print head alignment error. The printer attempted to automatically align the print heads after installation or a cleaning cycle, and the alignment scan failed. This usually happens when the alignment page was not printed cleanly, or the scanner glass has something on it.
Affected Models
- Canon PIXMA MG3620
- Canon PIXMA MG5720
- Canon PIXMA MG7720
- Canon PIXMA TS6120
- Canon PIXMA TR8520
Common Causes
- The print head alignment page was smeared, faded, or printed with a paper jam, making it unreadable by the scanner
- The scanner glass (flatbed) has fingerprints, dust, or a small piece of paper on it that interfered with the scan
- Low ink levels prevented the alignment page from printing with enough contrast for the scanner to read
- The wrong paper type was used for the alignment print — it must be plain white paper, not glossy or colored
- The alignment sheet was placed incorrectly on the scanner glass — it must be face-down and aligned to the corner guides
How to Fix It
-
Open the printer lid and inspect the scanner glass. Clean it with a soft lint-free cloth — remove any fingerprints, smudges, or debris.
Even a tiny speck of dust in the path of the scanner's sensor can cause the alignment scan to fail.
-
Check the ink levels on all cartridges. If any cartridge is low or empty, replace it before attempting alignment again.
The alignment page uses all ink colors. A near-empty cartridge will print faint marks that the scanner cannot read accurately.
-
From the printer's control panel or the Canon software on your computer, run the print head alignment again. Use a fresh sheet of plain white A4 or Letter paper.
Do not use recycled, textured, or off-white paper. Plain copier paper works best for alignment scans.
-
When the alignment page prints, place it face-down on the scanner glass with the printed side facing down. Align it to the top-left corner marks on the glass.
The page orientation matters. If there is an arrow or corner mark on the page, line it up with the matching mark on the scanner glass.
-
Press OK or Scan on the printer panel to scan the alignment page. Wait for the printer to process it and confirm success.
If it fails again, try printing a nozzle check pattern first. If the nozzle check shows gaps or missing colors, run a head cleaning before retrying alignment.
When to Call a Professional
If error 2500 appears repeatedly even after cleaning the scanner glass and using fresh ink, the scanner sensor inside the printer may be faulty. This is an internal repair that Canon service centers can diagnose. For older Canon PIXMA models, a repair may not be cost-effective compared to replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to do print head alignment, or can I skip it?
You can skip it temporarily, but it is not recommended. Without proper alignment, you may notice blurry text, color fringing, or lines that do not meet cleanly. Alignment only takes a few minutes and noticeably improves print quality.
Why does my Canon printer ask for alignment so often?
Canon printers trigger an alignment request automatically after installing new ink cartridges or running certain maintenance cycles. If your printer asks for alignment very frequently — more than once a month — there may be an issue with the print head or carriage.
Can I do alignment from my computer instead of the printer panel?
Yes. Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility (Windows) or Canon IJ Printer Utility2 (Mac) and look for the Print Head Alignment option. The process is the same — the printer prints an alignment page and then scans it. Using the software sometimes gives a more detailed progress view than the printer panel.
