Ink Cartridge Error
Canon Printer
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Canon printer shows an ink cartridge error, remove the cartridge, clean the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and firmly reinsert it. Ensure the orange protective cap was removed from a new cartridge before installing.
Affected Models
- Canon PIXMA MG Series
- Canon PIXMA MX Series
- Canon PIXMA TS Series
- Canon PIXMA iP Series
- Canon PIXMA G Series
Common Causes
- Orange protective cap not removed from a new cartridge
- Dirty or oxidised contacts on the cartridge or carriage
- Cartridge not fully clicked into the slot
- Third-party or refilled cartridge not recognised
- Damaged cartridge chip
How to Fix It
-
Remove the orange protective cap (new cartridges).
If installing a new Canon cartridge, check that the orange protective cap and any orange tape over the ink outlet have been completely removed before installing. Leaving the cap on is a very common cause of cartridge errors on new cartridges.
-
Remove and clean the cartridge contacts.
Open the printer cover and remove the cartridge. Using a dry, lint-free cloth, gently wipe the copper contacts on the bottom of the cartridge. Also wipe the contacts inside the carriage slot. Reinsert firmly.
-
Ensure the cartridge is fully seated.
Push the cartridge firmly into its slot until you hear a click. Close the printer cover and wait for the printer to detect the cartridge — this takes about 30 seconds.
-
Reset the printer.
Switch off the printer and unplug it for 1 minute. Plug back in and power on. A reset sometimes clears a cartridge recognition error caused by a temporary controller issue.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the contacts and using a genuine Canon cartridge does not resolve the error, the carriage contact spring in the printer may be damaged — contact Canon support.
